Hello,

Here are 2 birds seen in the steppe of eastern Mongolia in august.
I'm thinking of a wood Sandpiper for the one in the puddle, and of a young Isabelline Wheatear for the second.
What do you think ?
Thank you for your help

Hello,

the wader is a juvenile Common Sandpiper. Please note
  • the nearly unique patchy breast pattern, rarely ghosted by other similar waders (and yes, the nearctic Spotted Sandpiper
  • saw-tooth white spots on tertial edges and wavy white lines on the coverts are also good for juveniles of this species
  • many Common Sandpipers have a longer, clearly projecting tail (see the other thread), but your bird is within variation
And like you I hope for ID of the juvenile Wheatear. Thanks!

(The white "brace" extending up to the neck in front of the wing is distinctive for common and spotted sandpipers)
