Looking to mount a Canon 500 f4 Mark 2 on a Gitzo monopod. The lens will have a P40 Wimberley plate attached as usually mounted on a gimbal head. Can anybody suggest a decent tilt head which would take the P40 plate and provide a stable base for the lens. Ta

I use a Manfrotto 393 on a different brand 600mm f/5.6 and 300mm f/2.8

It comes with its own mounting plate. Your P40 isn't compatible.
The mounting plate is similar in length, for balance. Also has two safety pegs, like the P40

This thing is very robust, does the job wonderfully, and cheaply.
Down side is that it's extremely heavy and doesn't carry well.

These lenses aren't walkabouts anyway.
On my monopod, works superbly and safely
For the price and robustness of build, the minute or so to swap plates is worth a thought

As a minimum I would suggest the Sirui L10/L20, they work well. Ideally I would suggest the RRS MH01/02 or the Kirk MPA-2 but they are not cheap!
