Colleen - Thanks for verifying that my color and value choices here are not completely "off the wall" (groan).
Nick,Tim and Mike: I don't think I really thought about the warm forward, cool receding theory at the time I painted this. I guess I was more following the mantra "paint what you see, not what you know!"

Ken: I think you might be right. Either I'm a colorist or just a very unsubtle, in-your-face painter???

User- I'm glad the "Master of Moulded Image" looks kindly on this gaudy outburst!!

Gaudy or not...'those' jays really appeal to me...!

When i look at your painting i see the two birds thinking as one....[does that sound a bit daft]...? :smoke:

I am reminded of your raven picture.....[in this 'relationship/communication' context]....

The Jays are just great, so vibrant and colourful, the birds themselves look alive and light. A small painting with lots of big impact, works wonderfully well this...

Just paint "what you see..."

Sid,

How can you deny your experience?

It is truth.

Beautiful!

Ps. That's how I paint anyway! I just reach for the colours that fit. Never really even knowing what they are called by name, what paper, what brush what pencil.....

Pps. That's my practice. Everybody has a different one. And I only really understand mine. But, I really like yours!:t:

Hi everyone! I am a photographer with one arm [left and I was right handed] and I enjoy being outdoors but boy SID do I enjoy your artwork much more than a photo no matter how good the photo is. The eyes on those ravens is stunning and I also really liked the kingfisher which is odd because I rarely like anything blue but that is a really nice painting.I can't wait to see everyone's work on this site.

I had to hunt to find my thread!! I've been doing more reading than posting and have been completely occupied with some "plein aire" painting--or rather, plein air staining--putting a new finish on my overly large deck while dodging rain storms that held me up.

I am working on a couple of paintings and will post more soon.

Great to have you back Sid!

Just bump this to the top again. To keep from losing you, and to provide an incentive!

Those Magpies in your avatar are fantastic BTW!

Thanks, Phil. That Magpie watercolor ("Magpie Patterns") got me into the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum "Birds in Art" exhibition in 2005! Lucky shot I guess.

Thanks for the support Phil and Tim. I feel that magpie piece turned out nearly perfect. Can't say that about most of my work. In fact, I can hardly believe I painted it! Whatever I did, I've got to do it more!!!

sort of like a marksman making a lucky shot:-O but I know what you mean...there always the chance element in those jury things.

Hi Sid,

I hunted up your thread to check out your work - it's outstanding! Being a westerner myself (well, at least since 1979 when we moved out here) I really like that sense of place in your work. Like the Zion NP jays, for example. Really good stuff...like so much of the work here!

Hope to see more!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Sid! May you have many more, with lots of bird sketches between each one!

I see from your profile that you are into ham radio. I am a ham - N7ENL, at least I think I'm still current on my license renewal! - but haven't been active for some time.
