Most species seen in Britain per year? (1 Viewer)

Going for the One

If you are reading this, you probably keep a year list. But my question is which year has seen the most species recorded in Britain?
The BOU currently lists 622 species, but how many of these were recorded in 2019 or 2018 etc?

Ok. So I’ve done a bit of stats and I’ve come up with the following. This is up to and including 2018 and includes all the years with 390+ species

1985 401 species
1987 398
2000 395
1988 394
1996 394
2011 394
1990 393
2004 393
1984 392
2005 392
1983 391
1995 391
2013 391
1989 390
2002 390

Presumably this includes everything in the BBRC report plus an assumption about non-rarities? What about species still with the committees, or a duff year for a scarcity such as Short-toed Lark? How have you come to those figures?

I made it 402 for 1982, if that helps

Lee Evans will have lists for all years but based on his UK400 taxonomy so a fair bit higher than the BOU figures.

I think I read somewhere that despite all the access and viewing restrictions last year 2020 produced the highest list ever.

I just took figures from the BBRC stats and yes, lots of assumptions

My stats only made it 388 for 1982 so my numbers don’t seem to tally with yours
I only know because that was the year I started listing ‘properly’ and counted them up to see what I could have got. My yearlist was less than 200, but as I had reset my paltry list to zero, I counted them all as ticks.

I have the list on my laptop so I will post it on here next time I switch it on.
