Moths of June 2010 (1 Viewer)

Tri-Counties Birder

AKA The Portland Naturalist
A decent night last night with 42 moths of 25 species, and I managed a new for the year Sycamore (such a contrast to thier larval appearance!), and a Buff Ermine was new for the garden would you believe. Also a rather smart Coronet.

Good Mothing.

Bah humbug
Was going to put the trap on this evening - unfortunately it's so long since I last put it on that I can't for the life of me remember where I put it!!!

Oh well, Angle Shades and several Straw Dots plus other unidentifieds whilst mowing today.

:-O:-O:-O

300+ moths of 65 or so species here last night with 100+ Heart and Darts alone. No NFGs yet (still working on a few micros) but some unusual counts for here include:

Peppered Moth 4
Clouded Silver 10+ - most on the outside of the trap which probably explains why usually I only get one or two. The dog woke me up at 4 am which meant I got to see them all for a change
Green Pug 5
Vines Rustic 11

NFY: Snout, Mottled Rustic, Red-barred Tortrix, Ingrailed Clay

An enormous Light Emerald (1.5x the typical wingspan I see here) got me very excited from across the garden but refused to turn into anything more interesting. Very pretty though and extremely fresh.
Oh, and Cork Moth NFG - finally identified from photos after 4 days!

Not many moths in the trap here now, as the nights are clear and cold. The best one this morning was a Toadflax Brocade (nfy).

Fantastic Toadflax Svein!

Another okay catch last night that included my first Setaceous Hebrew Character of the year, as well as my first Pale Oak Beauty for the garden. Also a Minor which has yet to be ID'd, but maybe Middle-barred, which is also new to the garden.

Good mothing.

Chappett's Copse

Not much in trap last night apart from a possible Tawny-barred Angle. A walk round Chappett's Copse looking at the orchids gave several dancing Nemophora degeerella - one of which eventually posed for me.

Egret's, I've had a few

Despite cloudy conditions last night, its a fairly poor catch with 31 moths of 17 species, but quality remains good. New for year were Cabbage, Marbled White Spot, and a worn Brown Rustic. Also another probable Middle-barred Minor.

Good mothing.

Who was breaking away from the pack.
Decent catch again last night, though ID for some species proved very tricky.

Following some help in the ID section, here's the details:

Poplar Hawkmoth [NFY]
Peppered Moth
Heart and Dart x lots
Flame Shoulder x 2
Pale Tussock x 2
Brimstone x 2
Buff Ermine x 4
Flame x 2
Broom Moth
Mottled Rustic [NFY]
Silver-ground Carpet [NFY]
Large Yellow Underwing x 4 [NFY]
Gold Spot
Middle-barred Minor
Common Rustic [NFY]
Turnip Moth
Ingrailed Clay x 4 [NFY]
White Ermine

A few casualties this morning unfortunately - a Robin seems to have gotten wise to my early morning mothing antics. May have to adopt a new approach to releasing my catch.

Yes, the Saxon was an amazing sight. A really stunning moth! Having both traps out right now and so far no rain and the wind has dropped. Feels like the day before Christmas ;)

Well, I found the trap, eventually. It was ready and waiting in a corner of the field with a tub over it to keep the rain off, but the docks had grown up so much I didn't come across it for a few days. Couldn't find the battery, so had to charge an old one up that was in the garage...

Trap now running ... ;)
