Good to read everyone is finding plenty of moths. My actinic bulb failed sometime in the night (not the first time this year) and I just got one Common Quaker sitting on the wall this morning. :-C

Managed Common Quaker & Hebrew Character on Saturday night, both of which are new to me as I only started last summer.

I did have the Quaker initially down as a Chestnut untill I saw Surreybirders post & photo on confusing moths to lead me down the right path!:t:

I've attempted to trap several times over the winter, but never got a sausage. So I was delighted to open the trap this morning and find 5 Common Quakers and 2 Small Quakers.

Its so nice to see moths again!

I've had to have a few of these!
I thought all of these were Common Quaker but after seeing Ben's photo of his Clouded Drab I'm not sure about the bottom left moth? What think you guys?

Clear skies, very windy and about 4 degrees is forecasted for tonight. Better weather is coming here tomorrow with over 10 degrees in the day and 7-8 at night. Hope many moths find my trap then!

Thought I'd try something a bit different on Saturday night and drove along the minor lanes which are within Tudeley Woods RSPB (near Tonbridge). Armed with my net and a large spotlight I caught a few moths as and when they were caught in the headlights (thankfully there wasn't much other traffic!) and the results were as follows:

The Engrailed 2
Chestnut 6
Dotted Border 1

It was a bit damp out so conditions weren't great but I'll pop up there again soon with a sheet and the aformentioned spotlight and see what comes in, at some point I'll get either a battery or generator and do it properly!

Nice one Marcus! Let us know when you want to do some proper trapping at the reserve, during the summer maybe? I might be able to arrange access to other parts of the reserve now that I volunteer at the reserve - I know the new warden is keen for some moth trapping to be done.

I know they`re common but it was a new species for me today & what a fantastic looking moth. There were 3 on the toilet block at Titchwell this morning, as well as 2 Dotted Borders`.

I had what appears to be a winter moth last night. Is that possible? Ah, I think I've got it now - mottled grey. I'll post a photo when we've got some light. It would be a first for me... described as 'scarce and local' in Surrey, despite what the books say about 'common throughout'.
Ken

PS I agree that there's little point posting photos without saying what species they are.

Thank you chaps for confirmation of the Common Quaker, glad that my first instincts were correct.

I thought last night might be half decent but just 4 Hebrew Character, 1 Common Quaker and a Tort. alternella.
I've added a few photos to the blog linked below.

Josh - I'll be in touch.

I found a Twin-spotted Quaker in the house late last night, it was still around thing morning - photos to come later.

I also came accross at March Moth at the train station this morning.

From last night:

Double-striped Pug
Chestnut x 3 (nfy)
Early Thorn (nfy) - in the grips of a spider, it may be dead.
Hebrew Character (nfy)
Emmelina monodacytla
Epiphyas postvittana Light Brown Apple Moth(nfy)

The actinic bulb went off during the night again - I run the trap off a 12v battery which, after 3 years' use, I think is getting tired.
