Moths of May 2010 (1 Viewer)

Yesterday evening, I went to open the trap up so the moths could escape as it got dark and noticed a micro inside. I managed to ID it from the Micro ID forum on here.

Phtheochroa rugosana. A seriously complex looking moth for something so tiny!

Had only one moth in the trap this morning. The temp went down to 2 degrees! Not disappointed with the species, though. Second Hawk-moth of the year!

Castle Hill, East Sussex

A nice day out at Castle Hill NNR gave a Silver Y, several Cinnabars and, nfy: loads of Burnet Companions and one Small Purple-barred. On the butterfly front, lots of Common Blues, Dingy Skippers, a few Walls and a couple of Little Blues.

All in all a good day (apart from the traffic!)

Your photo captioned Common Blue looks like Adonis to me with the chequered margin.

Last night was rather quiet again but a few NFY

Eyed Hawk Moth
Treble Brown Spot
Figure of 80

and a few new micros for the year - all old friends from 2009!

I'm no expert but I think that a fresh common blue can have marking like that.
Ken

Ken,

When I saw it land I thought it might be something other than a Common because of the brightness. However, I agree with you Ken because I don't think it was electric enough and looking at the books new individuals of Common can have a small amount of chequering - unless we are both wrong of course!

Day flying moths

Yesterday, not in my garden but on a coastal path, I found this pretty Yellow Shell flying in the sunshine. Much patience was needed before getting this one and only photo.

Earlier this month I was out with my C.R. and we found several Adela rufimitrella during the day on Cuckoo Flower. Amazing antennae! On the same day there were several Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner Cameraria ohridella on the leaves of Horse Chestnut. Hard to photo -they're tiny!

Rain forecast for the weekend, that maybe the lot for my moths in May.

What a moth the Red Sword Grass is - thought I had picked up a moth then doubted myself and thought it was a piece of stick, she tucked her legs in under and would roll like a stick in the pot.

Red Sword-grass is a cracking moth and one of my favourites. The first one I had behaved just like yours, in fact it just stayed in 'stick mode', so the only way I could get a get a decent photo was by propping it upright with a small piece of debris. Only had one more since - in april this year, thankfully this one fully supported itself as you can see from the photo.

Both traps out last night until 3am, but not much came. The temp stayed at 8 degrees .

3 Apamea illyria
1 Peppered Moth
1 Scalloped Hazel

Also went out for a walk in the dark with my new torch to look for caterpillars and I found a big Oak Eggar caterpillar. All the other ones I've found have been young, but this one seems to be ready to pupate soon. Hopefully it won't die like the rest of them.

Not had the trap out for a few nights so it went out last night, didn't get much but did get a new tick in the form of a Peppered Moth. It must be Black & White moth season just now - the past week has produced Puss Moth, then a White Ermine and this morning a Peppered Moth.....

Had very little to be excited about over the last few days in the way of moths... but a pristine Treble Lines was a new one for me last night, and I've been catching a few early Willow Beauty as well this past week.

Kent Birder
Evening from Sandwich Bay Bird Obs in Kent - I've been shown Yellow Belle, Grass Rivulet and Small Dusty Wave so far. 2 Robinson traps out tonight - so hopefully lots of moths tomorrow morning!

Who was breaking away from the pack.
Had the trap out again last night. Wasn't expecting a great haul, as it was quite breezy here in the Midlands, but was pleased to find 12 moths this morning covering 6 species.
