Another decent night for quality, despite the slightly breezy conditions keeping numbers down. Its supposed to warm up by the end of the week.

New for me was a Clouded-bordered Brindle (pic 4), and new for the garden was a Scalloped Hazel (pic 3), and a Lime Hawk-moth (pic 2), which I was absolutely delighted to see in the trap. Yesterday while I was setting the trap up, a tiny moth was flying around, but I expected it to be a micro. I caught it in my hand, and it turned out to be a Small Dusty Wave (I think, pic 1), which is only the second I have had in the garden.

Like others, I was relatively surprised that last night's catch was pretty good, considering the weather anyway. Not sure how well Sandwich Obs did-Josh? (I live about 5 mins away)

Catch of 29th May

This is my catch from Saturday night. Both my traps out in cloudy and calm weather with temperatures around 10 degrees. 5 nfy and some other good moths! I noticed some ants in the trap during the night and in the morning I found out that they had been eating my Pale Tussocks!

Nothing unusual in my trap this morning in soggy conditions.

Silver Y and Rush Veneer were nfy.

Two pugs driving me potty are going in the id section.

Couldn't really have asked for better conditions last night, with no wind, a cloudy sky and mild temperatures. As a result I had my best catch of the year last night, and when I packed the trap away at 1am I had...

Just like Billy, I had my best night of the year with 50 moths of 27 species in the trap.

I got two more Light Brocade, as well as several new-for-the-year, of Common Carpet, Bird's Wing, Oak Hook-tip, Coxcomb Prominent, Heart and Club, and a Dwarf Pug (pic 3), which is only the second I have had, after an unconvincing record very early on in my mothing career.

New for the garden was Small White Wave (pic 2), and a May Highflyer (pic 4), and completely new to me was two Alder Moths (pic 1), of great size difference (not obvious on photo).

Highlights from the last 2 weeks trapping include Sandy Carpet, Mother Shipton, Large Nutmeg, Thistle Ermine, Poplar Lutestring & Green Silver-lines.

Just took the dog out to the garden and while she sniffed about I checked the garage light and found what I think is a Lesser Swallow Prominent but my sister thinks it's just a Swallow Prominent. Could anybody please confirm what it is. There's a 1p bet riding on it! 3 also found a Heart and Dart? and a Bufftip.

Yep wide shorter white wedge = Lesser Swallow Prominent.
The other is indeed Heart & Dart

Just been to watch my moth trap for a while, make sure it isn't letting too many out. I looked in and saw my first Lime Hawk moth (which was greeted with a little victory dance) Only for a second one to fly into the shed door, bounce off, into the perspex of the trap and the settle inside the trap next to the first!!! Cracking stuff.

Also a brimstone in the trap and one on the shed door, did see another moth in the trap but due to the bulb destroying my eyes I couldn't ID it there and then.

Full report tomorrow. Got to try and calm down now and go sleep :king:

33 moths in total last night, 24 specimens of 10 species Id'd on the spot (I am getting there.......slowly) 9 still to do when I get back in from work.
