My 2007 Moth catches (1 Viewer)

Did it have yellow underwings?
Ken

I don't know Ken. As I took this photo a cat came into the garden and dived for my bird feeders. I shot out side to shoo it off and the moth had gone when I got back to where it was. This is the only photo I have.

Looks like a Large Yellow Underwing to me. It's holding its wings quite strange though (or is it me)??

That was one of the things that threw me. It also appeared to be not so long as the other Large Y U's I had caught.

I would guess that it's a small large yellow underwing, if you follow me! The black apical mark and the pale costal lines look right.
Ken

I'll go with that. This is a variation I haven't seen before and it really threw me. I thought it was a large Y U in the first place then talked myself out of it.

I have managed to ID the rest apart from one. There are three others that I am having trouble with and the ID's I have placed on them are more than likely wrong.

1 & 2. Poss Plum Fruit Moth
3. Poss Pammene fasciana
4. Is this another Blastobasis adustella
5. Can't find this one.

Definitely too small. There is a vaguely similar one that I've seen but I cannot immediately recall its name - possibly a Tinead.

I have had a look on UK moths at your suggestion. It doesn't look like my moth but I could be mistaken.

Any ideas anyone on the other three (as well as the fourth)?

The Grapholita could be tenebrosana, the palps look quite pale. I'd probably send that for gen det.

Next is Cydia splendana.

Yes to adustella.

Guessing on the last one but how about Borkhausenia fuscescens.

Thanks Brian

I think your right on that last one. It seems to fit the bill. The Cydia splendana is one I considered but talked myself out of due to a white mark towards the rear of the wing in UK moths. I will remember that next time.

Thanks for yours & K3ens help once again.

I ran a trap for just over four hours last night and it was fairly busy. I have only just got up so am just starting the long ID and photographing process.

Hopefulyy I will be able to IDmost, if not all, of the catch.

I am gradually working through last nights moths but I would like your opinion on this Copper Underwing. I think it is a Copper rather than a Svennson's but I would appreciate your opinions on what you think it is.

I have given four different views, two of the head, an above shot and an underbody shot. I hope that helps.

Regards
John

Another contentious one. I think this is a Hoary Footman but as I have never seen one before I just want to make sure.

There is also another contentious one. The next one I'm sure is the Lesser Treble-bar. I have only ever seen one of these before and that was over two years ago.

Just a worn Scarce Footman i'm afraid. See the yellow boarder along the wing. This is much reduced or absent in Hoary. If you still have it you may want to see if it has white hindwings but i'm 99% sure.

Yep to Lesser treble bar - notice the acute angle on the very top bar.

I have been out for a few hours to watch the Marsh Sandpiper near Abingdon so I haven't had a chance to look at the other moths yet.

This one has thrown me. It has to be a marbled beauty and yet it was two thirds the size that I would expect it to be. Is that usual?

The first is from last night and the second is from a previous night. You can clearly see the difference. The first is about 10mm long and the second about 144mm.

Hi guys

Any ideas on my previous post?

I have managed to ID virtually all of them from last night. I have four left that I am not sure of or just don't know.

They are;

1. Poss Cydia splendana
2. This moth died whilst in the pot. Is it a Poss Cydia splendana also
3. Is this a worn Lobesia abscisana?
4 & 5. Couldn't find this one. I thought it was a type of Pyralid but I searched through all the families. I must have missed it somehow.
