My 2008 Moth catches (1 Viewer)

Hi Richard

I have never known Angus to be wrong to be honest so I would trust his judgement but I have noticed a difference between mine and yours which nails it (IMHO).

Have a look towards the corner of the wings on your moth. There is a light patch which is shown on the Large Nutmegs illustrations as being diagnostic. That is missing from my moth.

John

Hi john
why is the Dusky Brocade not a Large Nutmeg

Just bringing this back up to the top. Is there no one that can confirm these please.

I send all my catch records in and do like to have them complete when I do and my catch of the 14th is missing these two.

Here's another one that has just been collected that I found in the house last night.

I wondered if anyone wanted to have a go.

My thoughts are 247 Tinea trinotella but the other alternatives are:

240 Case-bearing Clothes Moth Tinea pellionella and 237 Brown-dotted Clothes Moth Niditinea fuscella

John

Both John's and Rob's tineids are Brown-dotted Clothes Moth (Niditinea fuscella).

Thanks Richard

Anyone else agree or have an alternative?

BTW Richard. I had just posted two photos of the Micro on the Warwickshire moths yahoo site when your answer came up.

John

From my experience, you can't safely ident E.trimaculana from rosaecolana or roborana from a photograph. I retain specimens for examination.

Another busy night last night. I trapped from 10pm to 00:45 and trapped in excess of 80 moths. I have come up with a few headaches with four Micros that I am finding quite hard to ID. One of them I have failed completely but three I have made a try at them.

See what you think?

1. Poss Hedya ochroleucana
2. Poss Celypha striana
3 & 4. Poss Gypsonoma dealbana
5. ???

Thanks again Mike

I had sort of worked out that No. 5 was one of those but which one. If it's caught you out what chance have I got.

Unfortunately the last one is the one that flew so I suspect I will never know what that one is.

BTW do you think this is a Rustic, an Uncertain or a Rustic agg?

Someone in Hants has done quite a lot of work on this pair and decided you can't really determine them consistently from external characters! Looks like Uncertain though, and it would be quite early for Rustic.

Thanks Mike, although dates at the moment seem all over the place. I have just caught a moth (in an earlier post) that has beaten the earliest one ever caught in Warks by a month.

Another busy two hours last night has left me with four moths that I need help with. The Pug I give up on. I just can't get to grips with them. Could someone tell me what it is and why it's that species. The others I have had a go at.

1. Unknown Pug
2. Poss Dingy Shears
3. Poss Mottled Rustic
4. Poss Uncertain, but probably best to call it Rustic agg.

Grey Pug would be a wild stab in the dark for the first (probably wrong again though!).

Rustic Shoulder-knot for the second and agree with the other two.

Thanks Brian

I have never seen a Rustic S.N with such a pronounce teardrop before. I think that is what threw me.

With the Uncertain do you agree Uncertain or Rustic agg?

I was favouring Grey Pug also but my miserable record with Pugs has lost me any confidence in identifying them.
