I just got enough money together to buy the Tascam DR-40X. It will come in a few weeks time through Amazon.
In the meantime I am reading what I can about the recorder. I downloaded its reference manual and hi-res editor. And today, through a repair department, I got my hands on both the schematics and service manual.

From this, I realised that if I use the Tascam for my 'field dish project' I won't really need to build a microphone preamp for it; it ought to accept the electret condenser microphones as is. But if I simply want to keep the dish project really simple, and not use the Tascam, then I will need the preamp so I can hear what the dish is picking up via headphones.

Anyway, I plan to update this thread as I gain more info and experience.

Information wise, Tascam has been a marvelous support.
