Name a bird for each letter of the alphabet- (1 Viewer)

Goldeneye - not really anything major but I once tried to see one at Wilstone Reservoir in Tring, and ended up deciding it must be a dot in a telescope - so I probably never saw it! (I have seen them since though!)

H - Harpy Eagle

4 hour boat ride, slipping through a near vertical mud wall and bushwhacking through the rainforest at night on the way back. All to not only miss the bird that was seen earlier that day, but to instead be greeted by a Curassow and a Spider Monkey (prey items for the eagle), almost as if to rub in that there is no eagle in the area.

That wins as the most painful one so far.

Even less of a certainty is bird (or indeed wildlife ) photography because you not only have to see the subject, but capture a meaningful photo of it.
There has been a clampdown recently on obviously staged photos, for example, using a fish tank with a backdrop, or submerging a dustbin lid with minnows inside as a kingfisher lure.

Regarding non sightings, I use various sources such as fellow birdwatchers, Facebook, the Dorset wildlife trust, online sites, the local paper and so on. I stick to my local patch and the Purbecks. The best has been the grey phalarope, which was completely unfazed by several birdwatchers and photographers (in fact, one person came with a long lens and couldn't get far away enough), the worst being the Temnick's Stint, which seemed to be playing box and cox, on one attempt was told it was here 30 minutes ago, but no show.

J - (White-necked) Jacobin

Didn't actively chased it, but it took me way to long to connect with this widespread Neotropic hummingbird (and yes, Jacobin alone works since it is the only one of it's genus within the range)

K for Kingfisher on the basis of a visit to Blashford Lakes, a series of former gravel pits, which have mostly been returned to nature, with a series of strategically placed bird hides. Ringwood, Hampshire UK. Visited as part of a group to try and see as many bird species as possible. There is a dedicated kingfisher hide, waited with camera, but no kingfishers put in an appearance. However, the Great Crested Grebe was a first for me

If noone has an "L", I can supply an "M", after a visit to Eyeworth Pond, New Forest to see at least one of the 20 pairs of Mandarin ducks, but none put in an appearance.
Can supply a T and W

N - Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet

Not a lifer but a US tick, tried for this bird in 5 different sites in South Texas, sadly didn't even get to hear it call. Mostly felt bad for my friend, since it was a lifer for her, but a missed tick for me.

Happy Christmas and best wishes to all those who have been involved in this thread.
Yes, Happy Christmas/Seasons Greetings/Happy New Year to all ... ;-)

🥂 ❄️ 🎄 ⛄(y)

(I actually typo-d Harpy Christmas momentarily there before correcting it, oops, not so good)

I have an I I can backfill from earlier - Iberian Green Woodpecker from my big year back when - iirc I heard the bird but failed to see it

This thread has been harder and slower than most - I guess I could look at my life lists/targets etc for inspiration, but is it that people don't miss out on much/blank it out/or just hard to remember??

Q- Quail

One was apparently showing relatively close by but news on it stopped before I could ever attempt it.
