Just thought I ought to point out for any who might be puzzled by the link, that White-bellied Erpornis (now in the same family as the greenlets) used to be called White-bellied Yuhina, and was considered to be in the Timaliidae along with the yuhinas, who are now in the Zosteropidae along with the white-eyes 🤯

Good luck going further folks!

Thanks for the thread again Will. I ended up with 3 armchair ticks as a result of it one way or another. Big deal for me, as I only saw one actual new bird in the flesh in 2020. I also found it a really good way of remembering all the birds I'd seen, and reminding myself of what they're called. It brought back heaps of memories of places and people too.

I can't resist mentioning what I found to be the most intriguingly incongruous post I noticed earlier in the thread, because I think there must be an interesting tale behind it.... My question is to Andrew. Andrew, how on earth did you manage to see bird 5518, and play a game such as this without posting anything else that remotely indicated you having been anywhere where 5518 occurs? All I can think is that you were flown into the orangutan rehab centre at Bukit Lawang, to perform an emergency operation on an orangutan, and were flown out again having only clocked species 5518, while your helicopter remained not even fully powered down? This is what I'll be imagining, unless you can provide more detail :unsure:

5518 is Sumatran Babbler. I saw it at Way Kambas, which is the only place I've been in Sumatra. Way Kambas doesn't have any of the other Sumatran endemics so I've not seen any of them. A lot of the Sundaic species I've posted would have been there though.

I'd also like to reiterate what Larry says above about how enjoyable this thread has been and to thank Will for starting it and keeping an eye on us all. I've also really enjoyed reminiscing about past travels and remembering a few birds I'd totally forgotten.

I'd like to apologise for not taking part properly until near the end with my paltry offerings, thereby beating a whole host of better-travelled birders ;-)

Had a thought earlier - since this is in RF and hence not viewable to most, if it were to be moved to a more open section (Birds & Birding?) new participants might be found to fill some of the gaps? Only a thought when/if the current 2 (?) people run out ...

;-)

Happy for a mod to move it if people want. I only posted it here because this is where the first thread was.

I'd be very curious to see how far we can get, I'd think 8000 would become totally possible, and who knows if even a number as crazy as 9000 would be achievable... (y)

I've moved this thread from Ruffled Feathers to 'Birds and Birding'. Hopefully new people might be able to add some birds. As you can see, we've already posted 7389 species, so to post something new it might need to be fairly obscure! If you've not played the game before, I'd recommend going to the first post in the thread, checking the rules and also checking the spreadsheet.

Unfortunately I played all my birds already long time ago, but it was really fun. Let's see how far we can get!

Was there an updated 'needs/targets' list? That would be useful, I think I found one about 20 pages ago ...
In the first post on page 1 there's a link to the list of everything that's been played (sheet1). Tab to sheet 2 on that link, and you (should) get the reverse list of birds that have not been played yet (plus or minus a few oddities, and only as far as Will's been updating it)
