Need a Bird ID - South Dakota. About size of Blue Jay or Robin (1 Viewer)

Saw a yard bird in western south dakota. Only saw from the back. Tail was brown with a horizontal black stripe on end of tail. wings were like a rusty brown. Size was about the size of a blue jay. Also had a white patch was on lower back. Thats all the info that I have. My girlfriend is going nuts trying to ID it. any help would be appreciated

Yes... I would also suggest a flicker... They would be a yard bird... White patch... Reddish or brown looking..., jim
