Hope you guys can answer my blue tit nesting query. Instead of going into the box via the front hole, for about 10 days the blue tits have been pecking away at the air gap on the underside of the nest box. The front hole is the right size for tits. Anyone seen this before

Hi Vivian and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with nest boxes, but I am wondering if they're pecking at insects/larva in the crevices? I see them doing that sort of thing under the eaves of a neighbour's shed roof etc.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi and thank you for your welcome message. I thought the same as you but on inspection the birds have actually pecked the full length of the opening approx 6 inches as if trying to make it wider. Very strange.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. Sorry, can’t help with the nest box question; I am going to move this to a part of the forum dedicated to nest boxes. Hopefully someone there will be able to help.
