KC - yes, an accelerating trend like this for so many plants and animals that are on the edge (even prior to the record inferno of last summer) is truly worrying.
It is only now becoming understood (in more enlightened circles - not widely unfortunately) how important the synthesis of the whole is - native animals, plants, people, and cultural practices.
This has proven a key driver in the decline of the ecosystem upon which the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot depends.
The loss and decline of our many small native marsupials (in concert with the loss of cultural cool mosaic burns - if people don't grasp what that is - it is soil building pyrolytic combustion at a level where even insects and small animals can escape the fire and people can walk bare foot amongst it !) has had a massive impact on the land.
The competition /predation by ferals has made life impossible for the remaining animals outside of fully fenced predator proof reserves. They must have been so numerous previously that they virtually soley supported natural predators like Little Eagles, without any deleterious effect on the land services they provided. (I will try an dig up a link to some recent research that I saw).
For a country to rampantly approve (with further 'streamlining' due to Covid-recovery) unfettered mining, water extraction, resource consumption and development, without a detailed account of all the ecosystems, and trends, just beggars belief. It is disgusting.
So much beautiful biodiversity requiring intensive care !
