3-D Effect in Bins of Different Configurations, Different Types Henry, You're correct about the Fuji. The 8.5x42 EL measures 122 mm wide open all the way vs. the Fuji's 123 mm at 65mm IPD. At 65mm IPD, the EL would would be narrower than the little Fuji. But that doesn't explain the differences in 3-D effect since the ZR 7x36 is narrower still yet gives a very nice 3-D effect. Yes, I know there is no difference in DOF among binoculars of the same magnification, in fact, I have it printed on my forehead backwards. :-) Let me rephrase my query: Why does the Fuji 6x30 and CJZ 8x50, which are different configurations, and the ZR 7x36, which is a configuration in between the two, but a roof bin, all give a very nice 3-D views? It's not the DOF I'm referring to, per se, but rather I was wondering in there was a connection btwn good DOF and the perception of 3-D experience???? The bins mentioned in the post (10x42 SV EL) as well as the one's I mentioned (6x30 Fuji, 8x50 Octarem, 10x42 SLC, which are different configurations, have different DOF, and are even different bin types (porros vs. roofs), but all share a similar quality, that is, they all give the impression of having very good 3-D views. When I'm looking at a landscape with the ZR 7x36 the separation between objects being viewed is more apparent, which allows me to better estimate distance. With the 8x30 SLC or 8x32 LX, the views are compressed, that is, the same objects seem closer to together. The Celestron 8x42 Regal LX, which is a full sized bin, has a better 3-D effect than the SLC and LX, but not as good as the 7x36 ED2. Is there an optical explanation for these perceptual differences?
