New binoculars from leica (1 Viewer)

dalat

...
Here the pic from Tobias Website, and the SV-Noctivid comparison.

According to Swarovski, the SLC 8x42 is 149 mm long, thus the Noctivid would be moreless take the place of the SLC in that row in the first pic.

Excellent Dalat, thank you.

Those are the two photos, thank you Dalat. But the top of the Swaro SLC (149 mm, Swarovski website) is in line with the lower edge of the sloping end of the Swarovision 42 barrel, while the top of the Noctivid (150 mm, Leica site) looks at least as high as the higher edge of the Swarovision barrel. I am not sure how much of this is due to perspective. Has anyone measured the length of a Noctivid on preview? As said in my last post, they look to me to be quite big. Leica sometimes get their website figures wrong (I have corrected them). The lengths of the Swarovision 42 8x and 10x are the same (Swaro site), so this cannot be due to the second photo showing a 10x. (BTW, the SLC 8x is 149 mm/5.9 inches and the SLC 10x is 144 mm/5.7 inches: Swaro site).

The Noctivid might be as short as 150mm, and it's definitely shorter than 160mm (SV 8.5x42).
(the distorted mobile phone photo above is difficult to judge)
My estimate is more like 154mm when measuring on photos.
Ocular lenses diameter seem to be about 25 mm (same as SV)
and also other measures seem to be almost identical with the SV.
The actual weight of the latest 10x42 SV FieldPro is 870 gram. So the Noctivid is not the heaviest as it seems (if leica spec is correct).

Just looking at the brochure on the Noctivids, which I got when I ordered the 8x42s, the dimensions in the Tech Data section are: 124 x 150 x 59. The weight is given as 860 gms.

The Leica WEB-site previously published for both the 8x and 10x42 Noctovids: (WxHxD) 124x150x68 mm and a weight of 860 g, pretty close to the brochure.

In terms of availability of the Noctivids, the Leica rep told the dealer I've ordered from that the first batch will definitely be shipped in September and will go to people who pre-ordered at the Birdfair. Any left (if any, because they were selling like hot cakes) will go out to other dealers with pre-existing orders (that's me, with a bit of luck!). The second batch will go to German dealers and the third to US dealers. Only then will more come to the UK, so I could be in for a long wait. Worth it though, as they were so impressive. Tested against my Ultravid HD + the image was just as beautiful, with accurate, saturated colours but with remarkable contrast and ease of view - probably down to even better baffling and the new, large, high definition oculars. The 3-D effect and apparent increased depth of field really struck me, as it did almost everyone I spoke to. They deliver a very immersive view and address the only real issues I had with the already brilliant HD +, which were the poor close focussing, relatively poor eye relief and a tendency towards slight reflections in the outer field in bright light. As far as handling is concerned, my hands are on the small side and they felt as good to hold as the HD +, if different. The balance is so good that I was surprised to learn that they were heavier than the HD+. Whatever the technical explanations are, and acknowledging the excellent quality of the competition from Zeiss and SV, Leica has definitely raised its own bar with these.

Well that all sounds very nice and that was apparently a not full production standard demo at Birdfair?

Did you notice the difference in coatings or whatever between the two barrels as some have mentioned?

Another dealer eh ;)

Still from what you say it will be a slow process. I suppose they make a bin to sell over many years so what's the rush.

Anyhow that confirms it. Everyone will have to sell their HD+ now as it's simply no longer up to scratch but it seems they will have plenty of time in which to do so 8-P

BTW I am not biased in favour of any brand and support whichever is ultimately the best or a good new product developed so if Leica have pulled it off then good luck to them and well done.

That says he's a dealer with pre-existing orders?

Hi Clive, can you explain your cryptic remark about a dealer?

Lee

What's cryptic about it Lee?

Maybe he meant ... pre-exisitng orders, one of which is mine, meaning his. Maybe it is cryptic.

Maybe he meant to say the Noctovid is rubbish and I'm keeping my UV?

Here is what he said Clive:" in terms of availability of the Noctivids, the Leica rep told the dealer I've ordered from that the first batch will definitely be shipped in September and will go to people who pre-ordered at the Birdfair. So he has ordered his Noctivid from a dealer but the first Nvids will go to people who pre-ordered at Bird Fair and any left will go out to other dealers including (he hopes) the dealer he ordered from.

Ok I got confused by the error. I'm so glad we discussed this Lee (cryptic for I wish I hadn't bothered). Or maybe he is a dealer and he's ordered a batch from the main dealer. Haha I've got it now :t:

Ok if it is as you say then my mistake and I apologise for being confused with the that's me I'm a dealer statement. Thankyou for your correction Lee.

Well if dealers are such a trivial subject I wonder why you made your original remark at all.

The comments made me grin - no, I'm not a dealer, just a birder going through that frustrating stage when you've tried some new kit, know that it's just right for you, ordered it and then (through loyalty to an excellent local dealer, rather than ordering at the Birdfair) realised that it's likely to be a much longer wait than you'd thought till you can get your sticky little fingers on the object in question ;-)

David, is your HD+ an 8x42 ?, the reason I ask is that when I tried the 7,8 and 10x, I was immediately struck by the 3d effect and improved dof in the 7 as opposed to the 8.

Obviously I won`t know until I try a NV, but I struggle to understand it`ll be much better than the 7x42 HD+.

We aim to amuse. Hope your new bin turns up in the batch you were hoping, the one when you were temporarily a dealer 8-P

and of course that it's great. Just watch out for muggers coming from the side out of the fov :-O

Hi, I can't comment on the depth of field of the Ultravid HD+ 7x42, as I've never tried one. I'd expect, when comparing bins of the same make & model, that 7s would always have greater depth of field than 8s. What was interesting, trying Noctivid and Ultravid Hd + 8x42s, side by side, was that - unless my eyes were playing tricks- the Noctivids had visibly greater depth of field. The Leica rep at the Birdfair confirmed this and talked about this being the result of "innovative technology" without being specific. Now whether the Noctivid 8s deliver greater depth of field than the HD+ 7s, I couldn't say. As for the 3-D effect, which so many people trying the Noctivids were commenting on, this may be a result of a combination of greater depth of field allied to visibly improved contrast resolution and the move to an open bridge design. If so, it might be that the Noctivid 8s exceed the HD+ 7s in terms of apparent 3-D effect. When the Noctivids finally arrive, I'll do some more testing and post any thoughts.
Cheers David

Yep, there are a few things that can indeed trick the eye into apparently seeing more or less DOF. If there is any "innovative technology" in the Noctivids that increases DOF why hasn't Leica plainly stated what it is and how it works in the official printed information?

Once the binoculars are in the hands of people who can conduct high magnification star tests of artificial stars at different distances we will quickly learn whether there is anything unusual about the DOF.
