Ron,

As sgtrange as it may sound from me, seen my former post, but we both agree on your post, but......

In sales the SF will be equel to the SV and the HT will be (if Zeiss drop the price with a few hundred) also be equel to the SLC.

Leica does not sell (except the Trinnie with a cashback)!
Sorry mate. The current Ultra is well built and all your conclusions are right but the customer will not buy it because there is marginal/cosmetic innovation.
I assume Leica Optics is in the business for the business and if they want to stay in that business they have to get their act together!

Still I admitt it is a hell of a bin, but it does not sell!!!

Jan

Leica seems to sell quite well - over here in China! We have these Leica stores popping up in the big cities, and customers visiting and handing over lots of cash. Sure, most of them are buying cameras, but the binoculars are present and I guess they also find their buyers. Those guys are rarely experts in optics, they want something that looks expensive, and in this respect, Leica with their fine looking leathered instruments is ahead of Swaro's green armored SVs or Zeiss' "plastic" Victories.

Cheers,
Holger

Hi Holger,

95% is camera and 5% is optics. This means that if Leica Optics sells well in China the 5% is much less in the rest of the world.

Merry Christmas.

Greetings All. I had the pleasure of comparing the HD Plus side-by-side with the HD, both in 10x42 format (the only format available). In normal mid-afternoon viewing conditions (soft sunny downtown DC around 2:00 pm), the HD Plus was marginally brighter (subjectively by 5 - 7%). I know that this not saying much, but with the endearing characteristics of the Ultravid, the observed marginal improvement is a welcomed addition, and a step in the right direction. Would current owners of Ultravid HD upgrade to the Plus? Better to wait till I see the 8 and 7 x42 to opine -- hopefully soon, and I will report back then.

PS: Both 10x42 samples did not exhibit any CA around the edge I often observe in the preferred platform of the Ultravid HD 8x42.

While I admit to being totally captured by "upgrade-itis" I'd never trade my Ultravid HD for the Plus. I probably will want a Victory SF though...

Why is that? Just not enough of an improvement for the net additional cost to make the switch?

(Agree on the SF.)

I just got my Uvid HDs in 2014...got a steal on them in a "certified pre-owned pair". ;)

If I were buying new (NOW) I probably WOULD opt for the Plus...just like with computers, cameras, etc.,...you know getting the latest at the moment to stay ahead of the curve...but even I (an ADMITTED nut for upgrading) can't see the extra cost that would certainly be involved in my particular situation to get 2%-3% more. The Leicas are already likely the best, clearest view I have experienced.

I tried the 7x42 this week, looking to try the 8 tomorrow. The sharpness and overall clarity I find superb, whatever Leica have done with the Schott glass it works for me, the first binocular in some time I can't stop thinking about, and respect to Leica for keeping the 7 alive.

Seems like I'm not the only one who finds the HD Plus versions are a significant upgrade.

Resolution and contrast as good as my 550*** SE (maybe even better !, there I`v said it), and in my favourite format of 7x42, with the impeccable engineering feel only Leica seems able to satisfy me with, no flat field, no sharp edge, quite a lot of pincushion, and yet I long to have one like no other current roof binocular I`v tried.

It just suits me perfectly.

Isn't the technical data likely to be identical to that of the nonplussed Ultravids? If optical coatings upgrades are the only change, it shouldn't alter anything in the specs except for transmission figures.

Yes, sure. I was given the impression at the trade show they had changed the coatings and some of the glas types and nothing else.

Holger,

The news program "60 Minutes" aired a segment last year that pointed to the same trend. The rising middle class Chinese like to buy European consumer items because of their prestige and "conspicuous consumption" factors. They buy BMWs, Mercedes, and Volvos for the same reason.

The problem with China is that it's the counterfeiting capital of the world. Manufacturers produce a wide variety of consumer goods and even cars that look like prestigious brands but that are actually Chinese made with Euro badges. One example they showed was of a BMW that was not really a BMW, just a Chinese-made car that looked like one. BBC's "Top Gear" also had a show on this. Rolex watches that are not made by Rolex, counterfeit Gucci bags, etc.

Even fake Apple digital gadgets labeled Apple may not be made by Apple in China or elsewhere but by a Chinese counterfeit manufacturer.

The Chinese middle class are up in arms about this, because they want what they pay for, and they also realize that all the counterfeiting gives their country a bad reputation. They formed a watchdog organization that tests various items and exposes the counterfeits. The government appears to look the other way.

Here's more info on this:
