Newbie help: Nikon Vs Leupold ? (1 Viewer)

We are looking for essentially our first set of decent Bins for use in hiking and general birding. Durability and ease of use are primary goals, as well as quality of course.

We are budget limited, and $250 is probably our realistic ceiling. Not much to work with, I know.

The Monarch ATB 8X42 seems to be highly regarded and close to our range. I have also checked out a couple of equivalent Leupold models at our local Audoban center and they seem to be good quality.

I am not savvy enough to understand prism and coating differences at this time, hoping the group could suggest one make or the other (or any others?) that offer the best bang for the buck. Suggestions on where to get the best prices on these also appreciated.

Forgive me if this horse has been beaten to death in the past. If so, pls direct me to where I can find the appropriate threads.

Regards
Gary

Hi Gary,
Nikons are excellent binoculars, which is why they are so popular. If your local Audubon Center carries them then give them a try. A new model of the Monarch ATB should be available very soon. It may even be out now. It is the 8 x36 and it is in your price range as is the 8 x 42. They are lightweight and waterproof and have very good eye relief if you are going to use them while wearing glasses. The important thing is to try out several of each if your dealer has more than one in stock. Buy the one you think is best. If you want to buy them by mail order check out Eagle Optics. www.eagleoptics.com. They have a 30 day no fault right of return, even if nothing is wrong with them. Their website also has excellent educational articles on binoculars and their use.
Good Birding,
Bob

I tend to agree with Bob's post about the Monarchs. They are highly regarded for a reason. Nikon tends to offer excellent optical quality at a price typically much less than their competitors. I would compare them to the Leupold Wind River Olympics in 8x42 despite the fact that the Olympics cost a bit more. Leupold finally phase coated the Cascades but kept the price the same so they may be worth comparing to the Monarchs.

Best price I have seen on the Nikon bins is from cameralandny. One of their reps is on the forum as gr8fuldoug. Fire him an email or pm and I am sure he can give you a price quote.

I have had the 8x42 Monarchs for about three months now and I love them. Of course, I am moving up to them from a set of cheap porros, so I knew they would be better. I think they are a great deal.

I have not tried the Leupolds, but they make quality optics.
