Newbie with Nikon 8x32 HG and SE Hi BF. This is my first post. Sorry for the large amount of info. I have read what every one has said about the HG's and SE's. I love them both. But here is my problem- had trouble deciding in the store so I bought both the HG and the SE and have birded with both of them for the past few days. The owner at my local optics store said be careful with both bins, but bird with both and I'll see you back here in a few days with your choice. I have been birding for the last year with a Leica Trinivoid 8x32- optically they are great not as good as the SE or the HG. The Leicas are little cheap feeling to me but I know they are not and little funny to hold, the eye relief for me is acceptable but I wear glasses. Leica is not for me anymore. So what do I do? I found the HG's heavy, optically very sharp, great field of view, waterproof even though I never bird in the rain or underwater but I do live in Miami. Also the HG optically comes close to the SE except for the finicky focus, depth of field not as nice as the SE. I like the slower focus (a little stiff) on the SE. The SE focus I feel can extract detail instead of finding detail with the HG. Hope that makes sense. So you would think the SE is the choice... but here is my confusion: I feel like with the SE I am seeing a smaller bird. I understand the 3D effect makes this illusion real but still I like the size of the bird in the HG. Can somebody please tell me how this works it doesnt make sense to me because they are both 8 magnification, similar eye relief and field of view. But still I don't understand and cant help thinking that bird could be bit a bigger. I would feel comfortable if some one would explain this clearly. I am willing to get the HG because the SE bird size is small to me. Optically- sharp, resolution & brightness I know the SE is the best in my opinion. Nikon has made this very difficult/ very frustrated with choice. Also as an eyeglass wearer (Astigmatism) I've never had blackouts with the SE. I roll the rubber eyecups all the way down. I never use eyecups with any bin. The SE eye relief seems a bit smaller than the HG. The SE bothers me when the view separates when viewing a bird up close or a butterfly or a Ghost Orchid. Please advise/ explain. Thank you so much to everyone that helps in this difficult decision making process. Carlos Miami, Fl
