Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help me identify a bird I've heard for the last couple of months! We live in a normal road of semi's, not a woods but lots of trees behind us , large and small, no water, the sound isn't a hoot as such, difficult to describe, it's a one note sound, 4 times sometimes 6, I've never heard it before and it's driving me crazy not being able to find out what bird it is!! Can someone help....please?! Newhaven Sussex England

Location is Britain; "semi" has a different meaning elsewhere. But a bit more detail would be useful. Is there a pond or marsh among the not-woods?

How confident are you that the sound first started a couple of months ago (vs you simply didn't notice it before)? Have you tried following the sound? Does it come from a consistent direction? Might there be more than one individual making the noise? Does it seem to be up in the tops of the trees or near the ground?

A recording would be best, "not quite a hoot" could be lots of things.

Most will have made that guess, for that reason. But guessing seems more appropriate than asserting.
In a re-posting which is disappearing further below, the OP has stated 'Sussex', presumably the British one.
Anyway... it's probably a tawny owl making their confusing less-common call.
