I must confess that it may be a cheaper option for those who do not have the money to buy a 500mm f4 IS but it is an option nonetheless.Unless Nikon have done something extraordinary I would have thought that a lens with a TC would not have focussed as quickly as a lens without the TC ?  And the 400mm f5.6 focusses like lightning !</blockquote>
