Gone back to a DSLR, one of the most difficult things to get with BIF is the bird flying towards you, took the gear out yesterday for some testing.
The light was poor in fact my auto iso went up to 6400 on some of these so dont judge anything apart from the focus staying on target, this is the full burst with none missing, going to use a link to another forum as the way images are shown on here would not work as well for these.

I really love the d500 AF system. I had that before going to the d850, which also performs very well though not quite as fast (9fps with special battery).

You shot those at 175mm, about 1/2 way though the zoom range? They look pretty good. how is the 100-400 at 400mm? I've heard mixed things about it.

It's pretty tough getting good ISO for BIF at 1/2000th and an f/5.0 - 6.3 lens. I use the Tamron 150-600g2, which is about the same, though 600 @ f/6.3.

Phantastic series. I see you've posted many fine BIFs at the "nikonites" site. This gull action is of particular interest for me, as it shows nicely what the D500 can do. Last year I've got two similar occasions (using a V2) of birds flying towards the camera: a crow and a juvenile Western marsh harrier. Very dark targets. The Nikon V2's autofocus struggled, with some blurry shots in between.
