Nikon Monarch HG (1 Viewer)

As a rule of thumb, before the Brexit referendum, I used to reckon that an item for sale in the US$ cost the same in UK£. So your estimate could be high.

There is a new reality now with the devalued pound and uncertainty.
Britain will no longer be fleeced by makers as in the past.
Nikon know this and are expert sales people.
Binoculars will be priced to sell, still higher than the U.S. generally, but modestly so, instead of rip-off Britain as in the past.

One on Ebay now for US $1389.99. 10 available. New condition. Estimated dates of delivery between Sept. 28 and Oct. 5.

He is also selling an Eyeskey 8x42 for $65.61. Curious coincidence.

$1100.00 US Dollars? Is that right? They will have a hard time keeping them in stock!

They may deserve to fly off the shelves Bob but over here Nikon doesn't carry the same weight in binocular circles as in the States. I am sure some folks love them to bits but I have never, ever, seen one being carried in a UK nature reserve or out in the countryside or even on the ferries off the west of Scotland.

Lee,

That $1100.00 price for the Monarch HG is pure speculation on my part. I would not be surprised if it is higher.

Low priced and mid-range priced Nikons are common in sporting goods stores here in Pennsylvania.

The Interns who work at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania, 50 miles south of where I live, all seem to use only Nikon Monarch binoculars. And there is a big Cabela's outlet about 10 miles south of it which stocks a variety of Nikon binoculars. Lower priced Nikons are quite popular with local hunters.

Bushnell and Nikon run more or less neck and neck as market leaders in sales to hunters in the States and maybe that goes for birders too.

Not even a Nikon 8x32 SE or 8x30 EII?

No Den, but this applies to all porros, I can go for months without seeing one. On our recent ferry boat trip back from the Western Isles there were about 30 pairs of bins being carried around the ship and one of them was a porro.

Over here Nikon carries a lot of weight among photographers but they don't have anywhere near that presence in the bins market. Its probably fair to say that in the UK, in terms of decent and affordable bins, Opticron takes the place that Nikon has in the States.

I should hasten to add that I don't visit loads of reserves just 2 or 3 locally, but I can't imagine there is some special reason why Nikon-lovers don't go there, and there is always a wide variety of bins on the Scottish ferry boats due to the birders and other nature observers going to the islands and ordinary travellers often have bins out to watch for whales and basking sharks. Honestly we see more whales than Nikons!

... and the new Tract Toric UHD (fantastic BTW)

Unfortunate choice of naming IMHO. A toric lens will induce astigmatism to the optical system.....

Well the "Toric" part might be unfortunate, but kudos (Not!) for yet another "optics" company jumping on the TV display bandwagon with "UHD" ...... first we had "HD" , we seem to have skipped "FHD" as far as I know, now we have UHD (4K) ...... what next? Someone's going to label their optics 8K Fulldome ?!! |^|

You guys can slight the name UHD all you want to, as it matters not to me. After 5 minutes of viewing through one that would change to something like "Oh, wow"......... just as you do with a SLC HD, only for 1/3 the cost.

Yo CJ,

Help me clear this all up if you don't mind:

HD stands for high definition in TV's , but I read HD in optics stands for
High Density which I always figured is just fancy acronym for thick, heavy glass translating to higher quality.

So is this still just marketing mumbo jumbo? It would assume so if we don't know where the line is drawn; meaning what thickness makes a lense ' high density'.

Your thoughts on "high density" ?

Yo JG,

Just looked at the Tract site and the bins are quite attractive aesthetically.
I don't doubt your report that the optics are good. Lots of more affordable
bins these days that are getting the job done.

It looks as though they arose from the same base design as the Conq. HD which has been relatively well received.
