That is also a possibility I suppose (though I am not aware of anyone doing such high-end niche work) , and in that case, Nikon (or anyone else for that matter) should also be able to license the design .....

Well, with only a week of 'Summer' left, the appearance of any PF 600mm f5.6 in numbers would come as a big bolt from the blue ! especially given the 'limited' supply of the 500mm version which is only produced at the rate of ~1000 per month.

With the amount of profit that this product must be generating it seems worthwhile to invest in a doubling of capacity to bring the 600 to market avoiding previous supply bottlenecks. I imagine demand for the 600 would be every bit as strong .....

There has been no activity on that thread for 5 months, and the 'Summer' ETA has been and gone, and now Fall (Northern hemisphere) is just about gone, and the holiday (buying) season just about on us (T minus 49 days and counting !
It looks like Nikon didn't ramp up manufacturing capability for the PF elements, and so are still busy with supplying the 500mm PF demand (no doubt they are also milking every potential 600 customer onto a 500 for all they are worth by the delay too) ...... :cat:
Surely the 600mm f5.6 PF would have to make an appearance (in mass quantity) in time for the 2020 Olympics .... ? .... Surely ?!? :h?:

Isn't there a higher F-# 600 mm on the books already? So why is an FP version necessary for those taking photos at the olympics, where the photographers as a rule are seated behind their tripods?

True, there is a 600 f4 FL already which tips the scales at 3.8kg. Gawd only knows when the lightweight 3rd generations of that range of supertele's are due - some haven't even made it to gen 2 yet ! ...... :h?:
I don't think those PRO's are the likely market for this PF lens (which would be a stop slower and less than half the weight). Those PRO's are likely to have a 70-200 f2.8, or 180-400 f4, or new (yet to be born) 120-300 f2.8 strapped to their side as a second system.
I raised the Olympics deadline purely in terms of the opportunity for 'free' marketing exposure available :t:
Then again perhaps I was too hopeful - as I have come to know Nikon (unfortunately), they will most likely delay and spread that market 'buzz' that the PF 600 f5.6 will give them until after the Olympics.
They will just ride high on the D6 and 120-300 f2.8 for the actual period of the Olympics .... this is one Leopard that doesn't want to change it's spots ! or so it seems ....... :cat:
