How good is the non-swarovision EL? Is there much of a difference between the two?

The EL has no fluorite (triple) objective lens. It has no field flatterer lens. Therefor it has no RB effect. It has a better balance. The FOV is a little bit smaller and the tubes of the SV are slimmer so it is more lightweight.
The SV has also a higher lighttransmission.

The EL is a hell of a bin IMO and the SV is the upgraded version with a lot of pro's and some cons.

it is a money issue-for me

I am happy with my nonSV 8.5x42

I considered upgrading, but decided the degree of improvement
would not be worth the cost

as Jan said "it is one hell of a binocular"
but the SV may be a little bit better

I was very impressed with the non-SV EL 8.5/42 that I used for a week up in the Scottish highlands. Am delighted with my SV ELs though I'm sure I would have been happy with the ELs too..
