Norfolk birding (5 Viewers)

Sculthorpe yesterday (Sunday)

two jack snipe flushed from muddy area by path to the scrape hide

flock of 25 snipe over

red kite over

probable rough-legged buzzard - a noticeably long-winged 'buzzard' flew over but always stayed edge on
before disappearing behind the trees so didn't get any plumage details

10+ bullfinches

4 water rails

just a couple of siskins and 1 brambling seen - no redpolls reported yet

c20 redwings and 4 fieldfares - is it me or is there a dearth of winter thrushes this year

Gordon,
I've been seeing them regularly from much earlier than usual this year, but always in small numbers. However, I haven't seen any since the onset of the recent rain & colder weather, although food seems in good supply. Perhaps the hedge-slashing that passes for maintenance that has been everywhere locally over the last two weeks has something to do with it? That activity increases puncture rates for cyclists...:C

Beans!

The flock of 32 Taigas at Buckenham were reasonably easy to see today from the railway gate...

Managed a very average view of a Lapland Bunting as it skulked out of the wind in the field west of the beach road at Salthouse today.

The only other bird of note was a Red-throated Diver close inshore, alongside two male Mallards.

The ghost of Jackdaws past

I was checking the focusing of my camera this afternoon and just fired off some shots of a large flock of Jackdaws with a few Rooks. A cursory check on the computer made me wish I had taken more notice as one bird appears to be leucistic.

Just to the west of Langham.

Good numbers of redwings comming up the Wavenly valley this morning at dawn. Most I have seen so far this winter. Also lots of blackbirds and thousands of lapwings on the grazing marshes. Last night under the moon big numbers of wigeon on the move too.

You could almost pass that off as a Red foot if you photoshop out all the other Jackdaws!

Marsh Harriers

At least 7 Marsh Harriers left the Cley roost on Wednesday. 2 or three females, an adult and an immature male and this very dark morph. All adds to the variety.

I went to Holkham Pines today with Alison and we walked to Burnham Overy Dunes. As we got to Meals House there was a bit of a commotion as a Moorhen rolled down the tiled roof and fell to the ground. It sat for a few moments then flew onto a fence and away. Strange behaviour. 3:)

Geese galore at Cantley early afternoon. c500 Pink-feet and c30 Whitefront along with the usual Canada, Greylag and dodgy Snow Goose type. A group of 20-30 very distant geese were almost certainly the Taigas but everything was flushed by a helicopter and I failed to relocate them on the deck. Otherwise, a distant flock of 20 Ruff flying about and a couple of Marsh Harriers.

Cheers,

Will

Hi folks,

Does anyone know any good sites for owls near to Norwich ATM or any info on where the supposed red kite roost is? Trying to find some good nearby sites for birds that we can get to in the afternoon.

Thanks!
