Norfolk birding (64 Viewers)

As Richard was saying earlier, what a fabulous selection of birds for December we are having. I too saw the Red-rumped Swallow on Christmas Day – I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be seeing any hirundine on Christmas Day, never mind a RRS!!!

The Pallid Harrier at Flitcham has been showing well on and off, but difficult to photograph. Here are a few shots I took on 28th December. There are more action shots on my blog.

Best Wishes Penny:girl:

Quick query - I'm in North Norfolk for a few days over New Year. Can anyone suggest a location where I'd have a decent chance of either shore lark or twite?

Here's another polite request -[snip] Police were also called today for the third time in the last few days for the abysmal parking on the junction with the Burnham Market turn off, one car was abandoned just around the corner in the carriageway and could have caused a nasty pile up. Whilst some of this might seem either petty or scare mongering to some, the situation is stirring up ill feeling locally and this is something the birding community could do without. So please just use a bit of common sense and everyone will be happy ! It is one of a few great birds locally so lets all enjoy them...

I rushed there today in respoinse to news the bird was showing. As I drove down the A149 near the junction I saw many people parked illegally on the verge, obviously seeing the bird. I considered joining them. Then I remembered this post. I did as Norfolk Snake asked and parked in a layby well of the road down the B road he advocated. I walked back as fast as possible.

I missed the bird by exactly 2 seconds. It didn't return. There's a fair chance it may have cost me my second place behind LRGE in the BUBO rankings.

I should have remebered the REAL Birders' Code, which has exactly 2 points:

1) A parking ticket generally costs much less than the average cost of a year tick anyway
2) It is easier to apologise for trespassing than to ask permission.

(Please note that this 'code' is a joke before you flame me...remember I just missed a bird by not following it!)

Red rump sadness

Once again twitchers ruining a good bird and a good norfolk experience. I am glad that you missed your tick and your coveted second place behind one of the country's worst fools. Go get a life and stop chasing rares find your own, then you'll be ahead. The only league is where people like you try to compete on how much time, money and grubby tactics you can spend to the cost of the environment, and to general humanity. There are others that might have seen more but not listed on your league. True people who love the birds. Please go away and leave norfolk we could well do without you and everyone parking like self obsessed jerks for this bird. This is why some birds not on your list have never been released for your attention! You will never know what they are either.. Best wishes Graham...

If you look in post #24864 of this thread there are details on the areas to explore for both Twite and Shore lark at Thornham harbour.

I also had 7 Twite a week and half ago at Blakeney Freshmarsh. See post #24906 for the details of the area in which I saw them.

Good luck,

Ian

I suspect (hope) there's been some tongue-in-cheek postings.
All that funny nonsense besides, I understand both the Pallid H and the R-r Swallow are still present today, New Year's Eve. So hopefully a great treble lined up to kick-start 2016 tomorrow, Cattle Egret included.
And Lesser Yellowlegs too...

Thanks as always for Titchwell updates throughout the year, good luck for your Titchwell year list in 2016.

I should have known better than to post anything tongue in cheek on this board shouldn't I? I even went to the trouble of pointing out that it was a joke in the Original Post, and STILL some people decided to take it seriously.

I would be interested to know in what way Mr Grahamarchy thinks I ruined a good bird and a good experience, though. By parking responsibly in a layby at a distance, instead of illegally? Because that was what my post was about...

Wouldn't worry too much - some people just desperate to be REALLY ANGRY about something!! I imagine most people read your post as is was intended and, like me, had a chuckle to themselves.
