Heacham South Beach 6.15pm - 7.45pm

Thought I pop over after work to Heacham to find maybe a black redstart or wheatear maybe!!! I forgot everyone is still on easter break, there were too many families with big dogs running about:-C

I soon as I approached the carpark a barn owl flew over. I walked west, through the holiday chalets and bungalows and had 17 linnets on the telegraph wires, a few chaffinches and greenfinches. 22 curlew flew over off the sea. Lots of woodpigeons were feeding on the lawns between the chalets along with a few moorhens. A family were now following right behind me, making loads of noise with a little yappy dog and a big bounding alsation! Mute swan in the river and a few mallard. Crossed over to beach and could not believe what I saw - the sea was like a mill pond and I counted at least 300+ great crested grebes!!!!!!! I noticed there were several fishing boats out on the horizon, also tons of gulls and other things that I couldn't ID cos' I ain't got my scope back yet (found out Nikon have finally sent it back to Cleyspy, so will be collecting it this Sat:t: - 6 weeks!) 2 turnstones and about 60 oystercatchers on the shoreline that all got flushed by the family with the 2 dogs! No wheatears or blackredstarts:-C AND I still have not seen a sandmartin or swallow yet! I then, crossed back over onto chalet side and near the carpark, 2 pied wagtails flew over. I walked up onto the public footpath on seabank and could see a few lapwings feeding on the field to my left along with 2 hares and on the marshes to my right (seaward side) was an area of water which was obviously a roosting spot for curlew, I counted 121 curlew as they came into roost, in the short time that I stood there!!! 2 shelduck flew over in the distance and the barn owl came round again following the river that follows the holiday chalets and then landed on a children's climbing frame in back garden!

Drove home and my tea was a bowl of cornflakes, can't be bothered to cook now!

Best Wishes Penny:girl:

Hi All,
Wheatear and Black Redstart at Hunstanton South Beach
Short-eared Owl Holme, also about 20 Brambling and pr Ruddy Duck
(No sign of Raven - how long would it take to fly from Gib Pt to Norfolk?!)
pr Ruddy Duck highlight at Titchwell, although I didn't go very far!

Hi Ruralchill

Whereabouts were the wheatear and black redstart exactly at south beach please?

You must be lucky with the short eared owl, as last year I had seen it nearly every time I went to Holme, but this year I have not seen it once yet!!!!!

Good game boys, good game!
Wow I haven't seen crossbills for ages! That'll be a target for this year. Not a patch on yesterday though, wish you were there!

Got it all whilst we were being lazy as well!

Cornflakes

Hi Penny
Hope you'll have more than a bowl of cornflakes for your tea this Friday!!
You've got to keep your strength up for all your birding.
As always love your bird trip accounts and all the detail you provide - makes it all come alive.
Best wishes
Richard

Hi Penny,
The Wheatear and Black Redstart were both seen late morning from the car driving North from Heacham North Beach along the rough (very) road by the chalets/houses towards Hunstanton. I'm afraid I didn't note the house numbers/names.
There we a small number of Sand Martins congregating over the reeds at Titchwell (although I couldn't see or hear the reported Sedge Warblers).

Hi All
Had my first Swallow in Norfolk for the year yesterday sitting looking rather exhausted on a wire, as I was watching the Spoonbill at the west end of Holkham.

At Titchwell in the morning, 2 Sedge Warblers were singing their hearts out as I walked back up the path, although I did not hear them on the way down. In the carpark a Chiffchaff was also singing well.

Penny - I have just returned from Israel where I saw lots of Blackstarts !

Nice to have you back, Sue!
For your info (and anyone else who is interested) I will be working 3 days a week at Sheringhem until the summer!

In a quick visit this morning Saprham produced 2 Willow Warbler, 3 Blackcap and 8 Chiffchaff, with 4 LRP nearby and a green Sandpiper

I've just seen my first Blackcap of the spring at Brumstead near Stalham; was in a hedgerow as I drove home. There's also a flock of 26 Fieldfares foraging in a field of winter barley to the south of Happisburgh. Ouzel bait!!

Must get this online banking done so I can head for the lighthouse with the dog... |:D|

Went to Bawsey Country Park today between 1.15pm and 1.45pm

Had a new year tick:t: A willow warbler singing 'down the scale' in the copse at far end of pits. A stock dove flew past, several carrion crows, a green woodpecker laughing:-O and a great spotted woodpecker in the birches. Several greenfinches, chaffinches and goldfinches, a couple of long tailed tits and a blue tit gathering nesting material. Also 2 small coppers! Greylags and canada geese on the water.

Also when I was delivering this morning, somewhere near Narborough I had a brimstone butterfly.

I just had 3 Blackcap this morning at my patch in Denver. Had 3 the day before at another location, there seems to have been an arrival of them lately.
I am new to this thread by the way, hi all :)

I had a Willow warbler at Sizewell on 31/3/08 Penny. Apparently there are 75 at Portland!

Hi Sue

Welcome back to Norfolk;)

Work really does get in the way of birding doesn't it! I was thinking about going to see the cattle egret this evening when I finished work, but decided against it, by the time I get there the light will be going - never mind.
