My first birding in Norfolk for a year or two today and, rather fortuitously, I managed to find a rarity. I was around the north end of Winterton early afternoon, not seeing a great deal, when I noticed a splendid female Red-footed Falcon flying along the sea wall with a couple of Kestrels. It drifted about along the dunes, eventually flying right overhead before heading off south before disappearing. I think it was seen by others later in the day.

Earlier I had quite an enjoyable walk around Potter Heigham Marshes and the southern end of Hickling. I had reasonable views of the singing Savi's Warbler near Rush Hill. Also, a male Hen Harrier over the Broad. At Potter Heigham there were three Black-winged Stilts, four Spoonbills, two Cranes, a Garganey and a Little Stint. Quite a good spot.

Congratulations on the find Andrew, sounds like a great day

Thanks Kit. I had quite an enjoyable weekend, visiting some old haunts and seeing a few people I hadn't seen for a while. Other good birds included eight Dotterel at Choseley, Woodlark, Garganey, lots of Hobbies, Velvet Scoter, several Med Gulls etc. Also some of my best ever views of displaying Nightjars. Plenty of stuff I don't see too often!

Could anyone explain where the birds are being seen at 'Potter Heigham Marshes'. And also where the best place to park is.
Thanks, Tom

They're southeast of Potter Heigham. Basically the area that the birds are being reported from is in the 'fields' to the east of High's Mill, up as far as the Candle Dyke going south from Heigham Sound to the River Thurne. The Weaver's Way around about 52.715736, 1.604408 should give good views over the pools.

When I was there the other day we parked by the church in Potter Heigham, though parking is quite limited there. Others may be able to recommend better places or alternatives.
