As Jim said, the Swallowtails were showing well at Strumpshaw Fen today in the sunshine. I think thanks should be expressed to Dr Martin George for allowing the hordes of visitors to watch them in the beautiful setting of his garden. What a kind and generous man!

Silver-studded blues are out at Buxton Heath and East Ruston. Large hatch of new brood Brimstones today. Painted lady seen tuesday, and both hummingbird hawk and broad-bordered bee hawk moths seen this week. A couple of reports of "small/essex" seen but no-one else is seeing them as yet. Very high counts of swallowtails are coming in from a couple of places - but this might be a clustering effect as nectar sources are restricted.

Still plenty of Swallowtails at Strumpshaw, including some freshly-emerged individuals.
(Just a request: do please show consideration to the residents of 'The Cottage': they are beginning to lose patience with over-enthusiastic visitors....)

There's a number of events going on this weekend of interest. Hopefully leaflet is attached to this post.
Also there's a moth night this Saturday 4 June at Emily's Wood, Weeting Meet 8.30 pm. Turn off the road to meet near the rough track at TL797901

Hi, My first message but unfortunately not a lot to report from the west. First Large Skipper here was on Wed 31st and fresh Speckled Woods have been on the wing this week.
Regards, Gerard

Late morning walk on Saturday. Speckled Woods abundant particularly along some of the shaded pathways. Observed five Large Skippers in total, at various points around the reserve. Other butterflies seen included two male Common Blues, including one faded specimen, plus 4-5 Green-veined White around the most recently coppiced rides.

Purple Hairstreak and Ringlet reported from Costessey yesterday. Suffolk has White-letter Hairstreak flying (Danby Wood in Norwich a good site for these by the way). I'd expect White Admiral sometime in the next 10 days, given how early everything else is.

And White Admiral reported from Holkham today - that was a short ten days!
Several more Broad-bordered Bee Hawks have been reported this week as well. The Rannoch Looper invasion of the east coast has now crept up as far north as Suffolk, which suggests that someone will get one in their moth trap here soon enough.

Lots of silver studded blues (males) at Buxton heath today, along with singles of red admiral, small tortoise, meadow brown and a white something.
