Apologies for the lateness of this report but things have been hectic,of late.
Anyway,here goes.
I arrived In Puerto Pollensa for my annual Family Holiday on July 6th for 19 days. Most of my birding was done from around 7am until 9.30am,so not to take up too much time, away from family/organised days.I did not venture out every morning but here Is a list of places I visited and what I seen, which may come In handy for anyone planning to visit In a future holiday In July. Many thanks are due to Birdforum Members Mike Montier and Geordie Dave, for a fantastic day In Son Bosc and Albufera.Great guys and great fun.
Albufera Reserve/Son Bosc; I Visited these areas with the mentioned friends and full details of our day,can be found on the Mallorca 2024 thread on the Birds from Europe/Spain page.Thread #750
La Gola; I walked around here on several mornings but It was quiet,as expected at that time of year.Birds that I did manage to see were Common and Green Sandpiper,Sardinian Warbler,Yellow legged Gull,Mediterrean Flycatcher,Hoopoe,Moorhen and Grey Heron. One unexpected bonus, was bumping Into well known Mallorca Naturalist,Pere Thomas, who helps out at the Reserve during the week.It was good to have a chat with Pere of Mallorca Natural Tours.A lovely guy and excellent Guide.
Cami Volantina/Llenaire; Again these walks were quiet but I'd rather be out walking, than sitting In our Apartment. However,I did see some nice birds In this area Including my first Eleanoras Falcon of the trip over beside the Hotel grounds. Also seen Booted Eagle and Red Kite, looking over to the Llenaire Hotel. In the fields were Cattle Egret,Stonechat,Mediterrean Flycatcher and a Cettis Warbler (calling only) beside the bridge area and Firecrest In the Pine trees along the road from the bridge.
Albufereta Reserve; I enjoyed several early morning walks around here. There was always birds to catch my attention and the Hide allowed close up views, whereas the Tower Platforms gives a panoramic view of the area.Plenty birds seen Including,Black winged Stilt,Little and Great white Egrets,Purple Heron,Little ringed Plover,Kentish Plover,Stone Curlew,Greenshank,Glossy Ibis,Common Tern,Zitting Cisticola,Stonechat,Collared Dove,Serin and a territorial Kestrel and 20+ Flamingos.
On the opposite side of the Reserve entrance, lies Sa Bacarassa Screen. This area was quite dry but produced many of the above mentioned birds. While watching from here 8 Stone Curlews flew past at close range and I cursed my luck..! However, they turned round and landed right In front of the screen, allowing close and fantastic views. Also while here,a Cettis Warbler was In fine voice and I never expected to see It,until It appeared In front of me In some scrub and allowing me terrific views of It.
Ca'n Cuarassa; I have to admit, despite holidaying In the area for over 10 years,I had never visited here before,as I associated It with being a Spring/Autumn migration "Hot Spot",rather than somewhere to visit In July. However,a couple of walks here, produced some fantastic views from the Screens and the Footpath In general.Very little water was In the Ponds/Pools but Little ringed Plover were plentiful,as were Stonechat and Zitting Cisticola.Swallows and House Martins flew across these areas and on one visit,I approached a Screen and the birds started alarm calling.I took this calls to be directed at my appearance but on settling down,an Eleanoras Falcon came rapidly over the Pond, metres from me,chasing the hirundines. What a brilliant experience It was. Also around this area were,Yellow Wagtail,Hoopoe and roosting Night and Purple Heron,as well as Great white Egrets.Hopefully,I shall return to this area In the future.
As stated, this was a family holiday, rather than a "full on" birding holiday but I managed out most mornings and thoroughly enjoyed my time yet again,on this fantastic Island.I have more than likely missed out some species I managed to see but this shall hopefully give an Idea of what's around,In north Mallorca In July.Probably the quietest period of the year for birding. For a lad from the north east of Scotland, seeing most of the mentioned species Is a once In a year experience.
