I've managed to get next week off so I'm going to Norfolk, Brancaster to be precise.

Obviously places like Titchwell, Cley and Snettisham will be on the menu, but I'm hoping others will have a bit more specialist knowledge of any other sites that I should consider visiting at this time of year.

Some more specific enquiries:
  • Anywhere that is good for seawatching, particularly if you've as little experience in it as I do. I'm keen to see Skuas, Shearwaters and sea ducks, cos I've hardly seen any.
  • Swanton Novers raptor watchpoint was a complete bust when I went in 2019, might I have more luck now?
  • Is there any chance of seeing Nightjar, Woodlark, Dartford Warbler and/or Woodcock at Kelling Heath at this time of year?
  • Well aware these are mainly longshots, but any locations where you may see Stone-Curlew, Common Crane, Spotted Crake, Hawfinch, Jack Snipe, Cuckoo, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Firescrest, Wryneck, Ring Ouzel, or any owls

Thank you to anyone who managed to read this far!

Very nice! Weather looks cracking for migrant arrivals from this Thursday onwards (though I fear a Friday night bunk with clear skies overnight). I'm going up this weekend to camp near Wells.

Good migrant hunting spots include Burnham Overy Dunes, Wells Woods, Stiffkey Campsite Wood and Blakeney Point.

  • Seawatching is best from Sheringham or Cley beach car park. Strong north east or north west winds are best. Arctic Skua and Common Scoter are pretty common and you may well get shearwaters, other skuas and sea ducks.
  • I wouldn't bother with Swanton Novers at this time of year.
  • You may see Dartford Warbler on Kelling Heath. Woodlark more likely in Breckland. I don't know but think probably a bit late for Nightjar.
  • Many of these targets are possible on a day trip to Breckland, even if September is not the best time of year. Firecrest and Hawfinch possible at Lynford Arboretum. Woodlark and Stone Curlew at Cavenham. Firecrest also possible though not especially likely in any pines on north coast such as Holkam. Wryneck definitely possible in east winds at coastal migrant spots - check bird sightings. Crane is possible - Horsey area your best bet. I suspect Spotted Crake and Ring Ouzel are highly unlikely but check sightings.

Thanks simmo, that was exactly the sort of info I was after. Didn't see any Dartfords at Kelling Heath, but I've caught up with Hawfinch and Jack Snipe at Titchwell, so I'm happy.
