This photograph was taken over quite a distance on Friday, WT79 was having to put up with a lot of hassle from Crows.

One seen from a distance over Eggleston Common, Teesdale this morning being mobbed by two Lapwing and then almost immediately by two Black-headed Gull.

No wing tags at all on it.

Yes, you're correct, Ian. One of the Eggleston pair is an untagged bird.

Please may I save your images for my Database? I'd be very grateful if you were able to send me as high a resolution as possible - they would be used in a Powerpoint presentation later this year. Of course, I'd acknowledge your work. I love the one of the kite and lapwing - not often we get this kind of photo.

Yes, no problem June. I'm afraid I've no better quality ones as it was a good distance away - even these are heavily processed to sharpen them up. It's a shame it didn't come a little closer which it was doing until it got mobbed. In the end it headed off towards Egglestone.

I've got another couple of WT79, one with two crows, the other on it's own.

Thanks for posting this David. It is very interesting - I hope you won't mind if I send the image to Ken, our chief tracker. I'm sure he will be keen to see this...may be able to explain why when I receive his reply.

Speak soon.

Hi June I walked from the Thornley woods centre on the west bound track towards the viaduct you pass a pylon on your right and walk for another 300 yards and look down towards the river if you pass another pylon you have walked to far they were about a hundred and fifty feet into the trees and twenty feet below the path hope this helps. David. P.s tried to send you this pm but said your mail box was full

Thanks David. I'm sorry - I hadn't realised my mailbox was full!!!

I'll pass this info to Ken, who will then be able to work out in which kite's territory the pair actually met on the branch!

June,

I photographed WT15 and WT43 at this time last year and thought that WT43 was helping out. It's interesting that they seem to be hanging around together a year later.

I was down at the Viaduct today and I've got to say that the level of Kite activity was amazing, for the first half hour I was averaging a Kite every 3 minutes and lost count after that, it's as if they are all suddenly taking to the skies.

I also think that the Viaduct has up to 3 nest sites within view and because of the activity I'd guess that they contain young. I don't think I've seen as many Kites in 3 hours as I've seen today and it was almost constant action rather than a few large groups.

I’ll check to see if I have any photographs which are worth posting.

It sound s as though you had a really great time today - lucky you!
Ken tells me that WT43 must have invaded the territory of WT15 and WT16, which make up our regular pair. It looks as if they tolerate him. He is possibly a kite which had a mate but it didn't work out.
You will come to Kitewatch, won't you? I shall be there on the first two Tuesdays, then odd days in the weeks which follow. Please pass on details of Kitewatch to any interested folk.

Is WT43 not a female?

I did have a good time and have been out again today and got one photograph which turned out to be quite good, at least to my poor standards.

I will be going to the Kitewatch, I'm sure two sites are visible from the hill, one is the same as last year the other is to the right when looking at last years nest site from the hill, I'm guessing that it it very close to Thornley. Both seem as active as each other, the new one may even be slightly more active at this time.

Is it known if Kitewatch is watching 2 nests this year? Try looking towards the trees to your right, it will be very close to Thornley.
