Only 5 winter records prior to this one :)t: Brian); all between 1989-1999, and all on, or very close to, the coast.

cheers
martin

A good bird indeed, but there are a few more recent winter records Martin. There was a long-staying bird at Leazes Park that I saw on 11th Feb 2001 and another bird (that I failed to see) at Meggie's Burn, reported on 13th March 2005. Possibly some others, but these two spring to mind.

Two Kingfishers today at Jesmond Dene - first one behind Pets Corner and the other next to the two bridges.
Not rare I know but still nice to see :t: And just in case anyone is looking for them for the Year List. ;)

Gill,
Lovely sight aren't they. Did they pose for you or was it a 'flash of blue' job?

Did you find any dippers? There's often one or two of those around, although they tend to disappear when the water's high.

FATHER AND SON TEAM
holy island with waxyplumer

1st bird of the morning was a se owl over the A1 before dawn. a good start we thought. It was low tide when we got there at around 8am uncountable amount of brent geese plus the regulars bar tails/mergansers/dunlin/turnstones.when we walked along the shore a young seal common I think??was right up almost to the grass and then headed for the sea which was about 500 yards away when it seen us .we were wondering what it was doing so far from the sea? On its “jack jones”.. red necked grebes was seen along side a few shags. in the harbour we got rock pipit brent bar tails curlew grey plover gbb gulls .peregrine had the curlews and lapwings in a panic on our way to the hide.just outside the hide we flushed a woodcock from the side of the path it must not liked the look of us as a man with a dog had just passed a minute before us and and it never moved for them!! Snipe Wigeon teal was seen from the hide and 3 reed bunting flew over .there was few stonechat about but we were looking for the merlin the goldies and linnets were a bit flighty so it may have been close by we did find its eating post feathers and bones all over by did not see it .waxyplumer try his hand at a bit of freestyle diving into a puddle 10 out of 10 for effort. 0 out of 10 for style:-O.. great watching to birds coming in with the tide. sit in the car on the causeway and they come right up to you ,great stuff .called in at cresswell got the r h smew and 6 whoopers came in a dusk a.. grand days birding

They were both just flashes of blue as I watched them fly upstream of where I was. Both times were caused by out of control dogs jumping into the water :storm: One of my pet hates this....folks who have dogs yet have absolutely NO control over them!!!! It's totally unnecessary as training is NOT rocket science and there are four decent training clubs in Tyne & Wear alone - I used to do obedience years ago with my dog and never let her cause disturbance to others!

No dippers either - the water WAS quite high and fast-moving but also there was a LOT of disturbance from numpties ;)
Bird-wise the whole Dene was pretty quiet :smoke: Couple of Moorhen, a few Mallard, Robin or two, a Treecreeper and a flock of six Long-tailed Tits in the Quarry but not a lot else :-C Oh, and loads of WoodPigeons.

a few months ago i asked the best places to see kingfishers...tried all the locations that i was given without success....three times ive been told...you`ve just missed a kingfisher..never mind though i`ll try jesmond dene this weekend(third time lucky)....on pet hates mine too is dog related...those bloody owners who go to the trouble of scooping up there dogs mess in a small poly bag then leave them hanging on any handy fence or branch...:C

Tell me about it!!! :C I was at Druridge Pools on Tuesday and there were SIX bags of the stuff just dumped beside one of the stiles that takes you onto the dunes! :eek!: Errrr WHY?????? Surely the picking up of the stuff is the yucky part!!! ;) These numpties get all dog owners a bad name! I love having a dog with me when I'm out and about and will be getting one once we move next year but I wouldn't dream of leaving muck lying or doing anything to annoy others :eek!:

As to your Kingfisher Hunt.......I've always found them pretty easy to find (now that I know what I'm looking for and know their call ;)) but in the Dene I've always just stood and waited if I've seen one whizzing off into the distance as they usually soon come back ;) Just keep yourself slightly hidden so they don't see you :t: Oh, and if you are going at the weekend or school holidays (or ANY sunny day) go early before the numpties arrive - you see a lot more then. Our fault the other day was that we didn't get there until after midday!

Great Northern Diver close in at the Stag Rock this afternoon. Three Slav grebes were knocking about with a small group of common scoter. Red throated divers also.

About a dozen or so barnacle geese were in a flock of pinks in a field just north of Elwick.

Grindon Lough

13 White-Fronted Geese flavirostris at Grindon Lough this afternoon. At 13.35 all 13 birds were resting on the Southern side of the stone wall that borders the Northern edge of the field between Beamwham Farm and the small wooded area to the East, easily visible from the normal road that is used to view the Lough from, and best viewed just by the track that runs down to Beamwham Farm (Not Beaminham as I told RBA - doh!, I blame the bad sign ;))

Earlier in the afternoon we suspect the birds were foraging in the gully behind the farm itself, and were not easy to see - best viewed further West along the road near Morwood and the nearby disused mine but distant, and at worst not visible at all!

In the same field but away from the WF, were a sizeable flock of Canada Geese that included a solitary Barnacle Goose and Pink-Footed Goose, as well as a small number of Greylags.

Red Necked Grebe was still at Caistron, although not close enough for a decent picture. 30 Goldeneye also there and a few Buzzards.
Dipper in full song on the Coquet at Rothbury, with a Kingfisher darting about, no sign of the Otter tho.
