What a pain in the neck you birders are. Iv'e seen more than you, Ive got more ticks than you, why don't you record this, why don't you record that blah blah blah.

I thought birdwatching was about enjoyment. I think some of you have lost perspective.

"you birders are", so i take it from that comment that youre not a birder then. Or are you a birder but dont include yourself in the group that youre complaining about. If thats the case then do yourself a favour and dont include the vast, vast majority of us in that group either then.

I mean what an absolutely stupid statement to make, no evidence to back it up, and far too vague - what the hell you going on about. You think some have lost perspective - i think you've lost your marbles. Do yourself another favour and get yourself out birding - jeez, so pleased were getting more posts in the forum now - its quality, not quantity.

Two Water Pipits at Low Newton yesterday morning, by the flash just north of Newton Pond.

Hi level seven..

Dead interested in your water pipits, were they in summer plumage ? I've never seen a water pipit at Newton before... I've been watching that flood hoping for a water pipit this winter...

On Friday there were 3 littoralis rock pipits at Low Newton, 2 of which were bright lookin individuals..... The rock pipits here often get onto the flood pool in that field too....

Some pictures of these pipits are on my blog...

Havana today. Blue, Great and Coal Tit, Robin, Wren, Goldcrest, Reed Bunting, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, 8 Bulfinch, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Carrion Crow, Magpie, 3 Jay, SparrowHawk, Kestrel, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, GS Woodpecker, Pied Wagtail, Mallard, Moorhen and Red Squirrel. I think that just about covers it. It was nice to see Red Sqirrel there.

Hi Newton Stringer

When I got back from my visit on Saturday evening I went to your blog because to be honest I hadn't seen a Water Pipit before and there was a doubt in my mind. I knew they weren't "normal" Rock Pipits and didn't look like any Meadow Pipits I'd seen before either. Water Pipits seemed the best fit from my Collins but they flew off before I could look at all other possibilities.

I'm now pretty sure they must have been the littoralis birds, especially as you've never seen Water Pipits there before.

Thanks for helping me clear up the ID and sorry for misleading anyone.

Graham. You're not the first and you won't be the last, birder to be caught out by Littoralis Rock Pipit.

This bird caught me out a few years ago at Cresswell.

Hi level seven

Don't worry, you haven't mislead anyone, and these littoralis certainly are not "normal" looking rock pipits anyway ! Those birds at Newton are striking and when I first saw the bright one I actually said out loud .... "....look at that !!... It looks like a water pipit !!"

There is a chance there were water pipits here too, which is why I was asking really. The place where you saw your birds certainly looks good for water pipit to me. Like I say i've been regularly checking that spot hoping for one anyway, so its not out of the question that your birds were water pipits.

I just posted up my link to see if you thought these funky looking rock pipits may be the birds you saw, or whether they were definitely water pipits you had.... I'd love to see one here !!

All the best

G

I would just like to say that it wasn't only Graham who was taken in by the Littoralis Rock Pipits as I was there with him and was sure they were Water Pipits. Never mind, if we were mistaken and we most likely were, it's a good way to learn. I have looked at more xxxxxy Pipit photos this weekend than ever before.;)

2 common cranes reported on rba. at 2pm. near the qe.2 park in seeded field opposite.nz.278902......

Still there when I left at 5.30. An adult and an immature. Quite distant from the road towards the southern end of what is a very large field.

EDIT. For the sake of accuracy, it was 4.30 when I left, not 5.30. Not that it makes much difference.

They are back at the same spot this morning Steve. There's a rainwater pond that's formed near the south end of the field. They were near that when I passed there about 30 monutes ago.

"monutes" is that a Northumbrian time scale Alan? They were moving left away from that pool when I was there. The farmer is not going to be pleased about those two scoffing all his seed.

Two Med Gulls in Church point carpark, Newbiggin this morning also.

2 out of 3 ain't bad

Cranes not there at 14.45. Rang the Birdguides guy to see if there were any recent sightings elsewhere. 'No', was his reply. He then enaged me in conversation about a moth-related trip he had up here to see a Conformist Moth http://www.vc66.co.uk/mothweb/jantomay07/2903b/DSCN2594.JPG
(didn't realise people 'twitch' Lepidoptera) and as we chatted, Hey Presto, the Cranes returned flying in from the SW and landing in the SW of the seeded field in the recess half way into the middle!

Glaucous Gull (1stW) on the w shore of Longhirst Flash at 3.30 pm.

Went for the hat-trick at Bell's Farm dunes and plenty of Twite and Linnet, but once again must have left the Bunting filter on my scope as, as is all too usual, I get home to find some lucky/better birder had seen it/them minutes after I left at 4.25 pm.
