Cranes not there at 14.45. Rang the Birdguides guy to see if there were any recent sightings elsewhere. 'No', was his reply. He then enaged me in conversation about a moth-related trip he had up here to see a Conformist Moth http://www.vc66.co.uk/mothweb/jantomay07/2903b/DSCN2594.JPG
(didn't realise people 'twitch' Lepidoptera) and as we chatted, Hey Presto, the Cranes returned flying in from the SW and landing in the SW of the seeded field in themrecess half way into the middle!

Glaucous Gull (1stW) on the w shore of Longhirst Flash at 3.30 pm.

Went for the hat-trick at Bell's Farm dunes and plenty of Twite and Linnet, but once again must have left the Bunting filter on my scope as, as is all too usual, I get home to find some lucky/better birder had seen it/them minutes after I left at 4.25 pm.
Hi Gordon there are info services for people who are interested in seeing different butterflies, moths and dragonflies .I know North East birdline often reports butterflies moths etc during the summer.

This is a canny site to start Gordon run by a long time birder and keen moth-er and photographer.

DIGIDOPE
The Cranes where in better light late afternoon but with a strong wind not helping my digiscoping efforts, the attached couple of shots show the adult to have a metal ring on the right leg.

Woodhorn cranes

I managed to take this just before 11:00 this morning but the wind was terrific. It was blowing parallel with the hedge so there was no shelter there. View attachment 130915 It even managed to blow my scope over and that is without the tripod legs being extended. I should have dropped in to ASDA on the way and bought a big bag of potatoes to hang from the tripod. 8-P

The best place I found for a photograph was to open the boot of the car and shelter behind that.

What puzzles me is how they were spotted in the first place. They were way over the other side of the field, there was no way I would have found them if I had not been looking for them. All the other posts I've read also place them on the far side of the enormous field.

I can only assume someone saw them flying in. Birds that size and shape would certainly be noticed to a birder in a car if they came in low over the A189.

Tearful!

Will @ Bill - your comment re. Laps had me in tears (I am easily pleased)!

I reckon if I start big (Common Cranes) eventually I will get to the LBJs. Clearly the RL Buzzard (that wasn't) is my current size limit!

Keep up the good work. I am off to Liverpool now for the weekend so you have a chance to get more than 10 ahead.:egghead:

I don't know if any lapland buntings are still there, but if they are they should be feeling at home. It's like bloody Lapland out there today. Our garden's white with snow at the minute.
