Rose ringed parakeet.
Does anybody know the status of the Rose ringed parakeet in Northumberland ?
I saw a bird early yesterday morning at Kirkley Hall. About the same time last year I saw a bird fly over the centre of Ponteland, maybe the same bird. Pat

Hi Pat

It isn't on the county list, as it's considered unlikely that birds from the large populations in the south are travellling this far north.

There are a few recent records though, mainly from the Darras Hall/Ponteland area. I found one at Woodhorn in early October last year.

It has been on the county list in the past...

cheers

Yesterday I had a Red Kite near the Pontop Pike TV mast. I didnt get a chance to see if it was tagged or not as I was driving past at the time..

They've also been hanging around at Teesside in recent years and two or three years ago there was a long-staying couple in a garden at Leeds. Isolated instances, well away from their Surrey stronghold, but rather a coincidence that they are rose-ringed also, rather than any of the other breeds that could have escaped.

If the Teeside birds have been breeding, whether they came from the original escapes in the South or established themselves independantly, then there must be an increase in the possibility of records like this originating from there. Is there an annual re-assessment of status on species such as this at the CRC level?

One of the lads I work with, gets them in his garden in Darras Hall occasionally. He said he hasn't seen or heard any for a couple of months though.

Hi everyone. Are the cranes still around? Ive got a couple of hours spare in the morning and might have a try if theyre still there. Also is the GW Teal still at Woodhorn? Its on the way to the crane site for me! Cheers!

New bird arrivals in the NE

Birdguides have reported a White Stork in Gosforth yesterday evening:

"one in shallow water on construction site just north of Fawdon at c.NZ219698 yesterday evening"

I think that's what the locals called the Red hills. Might be worth a look to see if it's still around.

ALSO reported - a Firecrest in the Gut at St Mary's.
All sounds very Spring-like to me!

Just been out on my bike to look for the White Stork, at the Great Park, without any luck. What a nice little complex of ponds though. Birds seen were 3 pairs of Mute Swan, Mallard, Wigeon, Coot, Little Grebe, Lapwing, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Canada and Greylag Goose, Reed Bunting, Yellowhammer, Grey and pied Wagtail, Wood Pigeon, Stock Dove and various Gulls.

White Stork

Photo on Birdguides uploaded and dated today. It's down as Newcastle upon Tyne but no specific location. I have emailed the photographer to get more detail (if he will declare any). And there's one just gone on Birdguides seen up on the Borders at 18.04 hrs (a Stork not a photo!).

The map on Birdguides this morning had it in the building site across the road north of the Kingston Park estate. I passed there at 8.45 this morning on my way to Tesco and again an hour later. I didn't know about the report at the time, so I never looked.

If it was there last night I reckon the site may have knocked off by then, so it would have had some peace. Start of play this morning could have flushed it if it was still there.

No sign of the stork. Did anybody have any luck?
There were still plenty of nice birds to see including 3 chiffchaffs.
