Brian, I saw a Crow at Anitsford the other day, that looked very similar to your bird.

I had my first Swallow of the year at Newcastle airport yesterday.

.but why post a report of birds at St Mary's on the Durham thread I wonder? No matter, I'm off to see them shortly....

Being a newby to the bird forum, and my Interest Is mainly photoraphing birds/wildlife atc, I don't know the boundries etc, and also thought I could only post on the one forum i.e Durham, as I'm from that area.
Anyway you live and learn so next time I'm over the border so to speak, If I get anything of Interest I'll be sure to post on the relevant Forum:t:.

Attached Is a few different shots from St, Mary's pool, taken yesterday.

Also thanks to Seggs for your PM comments and Info:t:.

Nice set of photos there Scuzz, Garganey showing well again today, also a bit of movement on the sea with gannets, fulmars, scoter all noted. The highlight was 3 Manx Shearwater north.
The fox sat on the wetland surrounded by about twenty Carrion crow, it didnt bat an eyelid.

Wind In The Willows

Delayed start today. Working too hard this week so no time to visit Mr Asda. Got up this morning and our cupboards made Old Mother Hubbard's look like Nigella Lawson's!! After a domestic restock, off to get some air.

St. Mary's was good for the Garganey (10.45 am), although the 'gentle breeze' was moving well through the willows, so no migrants I could see or hear. Added Gannet to the year list too.

Went elsewhere and ticked BN Grebe and Ruddy Duck (11.45 am).

14 Whoopers at Longhirst Flash, no white winged gulls though (1 pm). Two RPs at Bothal, but no LRPs.

East Chev. was dead as was Arcot.

Been up the Cheviots for a couple of days.
Decided to head up the coastal route on Thursday afternoon .
The Cranes were still showing well in the middle of the field , despite the farmer spraying the far side.
Despite being no Gull expert, managed to pick out a Glaucous on Linton Ponds.
Finally called in at Druridge Pools, where the Firecrest gave itself away immediately.(Is there two here ?) Pretty certain i heard another one calling..
The Harthope Valley was as productive as ever on Friday, single Ring Ouzel in the Hawsen Burn area . Loads of Green Woodpeckers , Grey Wags, Lesser Redpolls, Buzzards, Red Legs, Stonechats and a few Woodcock..

Good to meet you, too, Steve.:t: Always nice to put a face to a name.

When I showed my wife (non-birder) a pic of the drake garganey, she said: "It looks as if it's made out of three different ducks". It had never struck me before, but you can see what she means.

St Mary's Island

At St Mary's Island this morning in between several blizzards! Amongst the usuals, caught the Garganey on the pool but too far to photograph, White Wagtail (so everyone there said), Rock Pipit and the dodgy looking Carrion Crow around the North shore, had to give up when the weather REALLY started!

Wagtail

Hi Nellieberta,

I'm pretty sure that is a female Pied Wagtail, although they can be tricky. The mantle colour doesn't look pale enough for White Wagtail, the flanks have a lot of grey on them and the black of the crown and nape seems to merge diffusely into the mantle.

Cheers,
