It was heading low E/NE when last seen - probably towards St Mary's :t:

cheers

Agreed.

Although it came up on the pager later on as headed High and South??

Last time I saw it was headed over our heads Northwards towards Backworth/Beehive/St Marys etc - the opposite of South?

Did you manage any photos Martin?

hi alan
i also had some confusion with that report.(after a few people i met questioned me on the report and the bird).the bird was heading in the direction you mentioned...last and only time i saw it..but it was reported latter today...but sounded a brief encounter.

I'm not doubting that it was seen headed South - more that it probably explains why it wasn't picked up again when folks headed North of the visitors centre :)

This picnic site/car park is a regular meeting place for planned trips to the Harthope and has free public toilet failities...but you can walk on as far as Langleeford Hope.

The toilets have now been closed, so the nearest ones are in Wooler.

There is a good footpath beyond Langleeford Hope as well, all the way to the source of the Harthope Burn.

cheers

Only managed a few record shots

At 09:30 the bird flew from over the pond, towards the visitor centre and then low E/NE over the buildings. We went around to the horse paddock and the gathered group of birders there hadn't seen the bird for a little while. AFAIK that was the last sighting until the one at lunchtime.

Druridge Bay produced some decent bits and pieces yesterday:

CRESSWELL POND
Quiet and too full of water - Whimbrel, 6 Tree Sparrows, Sedge Warbler and 2 Sandwich Terns being the highlights. Looks like the Swew has finally vanished.

DRURIDGE POOLS
Some good stuff around.... Long eared Owl (hunting in ditches next to Budge hide) + 8 Whimbrel on the flooded field. 5 Black tailed Godwits and a Peregrine overhead. Lots of Willow Warblers around with Swifts, Swallows and Sand Martins overhead.

ALSO no less than 4 Otters seen together on the main pool !!

Common Sandpiper's at Longhirst flash and Bothal pond but not much else.

Spent the best part of the week in the Harthope Valley, the highlight been a Great Grey Shrike (still there yesterday afternoon). Loads about as usual including Green Woodpeckers, Cuckoos, Whinchats, about 20 Wheatear, 6 Ring Ouzel and plenty of Young Dippers. Buzzards are doing well with 7 seen together.
