St Marys Island today, flogged the patch before rain stopped play ok im a wimp i admit it.
Noticeable increase in migrants my first Wheatear (4) and a single Whinchat mixed in with them in the mast field. Sedge warbler south of the toilet block, 2 Whitethroat half heartedly singing, 4 Whimbrel overhead and a couple of Goldeneye in the North bay Sanderling numbers down to 6 birds.

Called in at Big Waters this afternoon. The two Black Terns were showing very well, but I didn't see the Little Gulls that were reported.

Thought I was.

I was there at 2.45pm. Got the Terns but not the Gulls. May be you should have taken Amy and I should have taken Carolyn?!?!?!?

Can of worms open!! I will have to take Amy with me every time I go birding now and you will have to take Carolyn, or we won't see any more birds.

10.30 Drake Garganey in marsh just past goats Field easily viewed from wagon way but would recommend scope as it often skulked in the sedge.Whimbrel also reported in the area

Just think what I could have seen........

.........................if I had taken Mrs M.

Dawn Chorus at Harthope, only me and the birds! And what a morning!

Parked the car at Backwood Burn at 05.20 hrs, Cuckoo (male) (151) over and into the woods on the west side of that burn.

Heard two Green Woodpeckers, one to the north of the access road in the roadside trees and one where the Cockoo had gone. Plumbed for the latter. Good call. The bird (male) (152) was back and forth between the wood and the east bankside of the burn. Best views I have ever had.

Two Dippers (153) to the east of the bridge to the Gamekeeper's Cottage gathering nesting material.

No sign of the GG Shrike on the path to Threestones Burn, but plenty of Whinchats (154).

And now the best bit. If you thought the 2005 Champion's League Final had the best 1,2,3, think again.

Walking along from Langleeford Farm, my first Woodcock (155, and Lifer 231) (didn't realise they were so big - would make a good meal!), followed by a Tree Pipit (156 and 232) and then the absolute dog's whatevers, a male Redstart (157 and 233).

St Marys today quite warm with high cloud. A pair of Garganey back on the wetland my first Swift of the year and a reeling Gropper between the top rifle butts. Whitethroats, Willow warblers Chiffchaff and Sedge Warbler singing their hearts out, single female Wheatear in the stubble field

sat and watched the grasshopper warbler for about an hour everywhere else seemed a bit quiet. Wish i had a camera, it didn't seem that bothered with all the people and dogs walking around it. Heard a Lesser Whitethroat in the bushes near it but couldn't find it. lots of turnstones, a few dunlin and 2 purple sands feeding in the seaweed when the tide came i, few in summer plumage.

Well done Gordon!! A good morning work there.

Just one thing though. We don't mention eating birds on this forum. ;)

Help!!

As a new reader of this section..and also new to birding...I am puzzled(and I'm sure one or two others are also) re. the nick names given to certain birds??

Anyone spare a few minutes to list the common abbreviations you list...ie
Yaffle
Groppers
Mippits...take it this is a Meadow Pipit??

Really appreciate any help...over to you guys!!

Cheers DXB

Hi Mate, you're spot on with Mippits :t:

'Yaffle' or 'Rain bird' is a Green Woodpecker, and 'Gropper' is a shortened version of Grasshopper Warbler - hope this helps
Cheers, Dougie.
