How do Ross, what you expecting to (re)find at Hedgeley and Branton GPs then...? drake American Wigeon ?
& perhaps a Surf Scoter lurking in with the Commons ?

Great Grey Shrike reported "nr Consett", - although bird appears to be in Northumberland, off the B6278 (Shotley Bridge to Derwent Res road) between Carterway Heads & Snods Edge.

Next question - anyone know where Hedgeley and Branton GPs are?

I used to live near to these sites when we first moved up to Northumberland in 2004 :t: There's two of them now.

Head north up the A697. Go through Powburn and just outside you'll see Hedgeley Services (garage and cafe). Go on another 100 yards or so and if you turn RIGHT towards Beanley there's a huge lake been created there - it's a quiet road so I usually just park on the verges.
OR....directly opposite the turn-off for Beanley you can turn LEFT and head up a straight track that goes past a council yard and, at the end, a caravan park and follow the road for another quarter mile or so and BEFORE you go into the village of Branton the pools are on your right, over a gate. Again, either park on the verge or there's a parking area just as you go into the village - just a few yards walk. I've had Kingfisher along the stream here in the past.
The area, incidentally, is a VERY good site for seeing Tawny and Barn Owls at dusk :t: My very first bird on January 1st 2006 was a Barn Owl flying level with my car at 5am o:)

There was a report left on the board at Cresswell the other day that said "Bittern x2".

I gave it an hour and a half at Cresswell this morning. A water rail was feeding right under the front of the hide, but apart from that it was quiet.

Hi guys

Just logging in so I get the posts and can see if anything turns up worth seeing whilst I'm over in the UK during Christmas. Generally interested anyway and can't think why I didn't think of this before.

All the best

It's not worth me looking for them, the way my luck is going at the minute. I can't seem to get onto obvious birds never mind a Bittern. I've been chasing Waxwing for about two week now and I still haven't seen any.

Hallo (posted on the Durham page also, sorry if you'v seen this already)

I hope someone can help me. I was wondering if anyone has recently had Hawfinch at Sunderland Bridge or thereabouts. Hoping to visit again soon (been a couple of times but never been successful with Hawfinch) and wondered just what was around. Any recent lists from the area would be really helpful.

Thanks.

Brief visit to patch today on high tide, highlights include 9 Whoopers North, & 7 Purple Sandpipers, 40+ Sanderling ,Grey Wagtail, & 7 Rock Pipits, including a Scandanavian rock pipit, strangely no Golden Plover ?. Good numbers of common waders around.

Long staying Brent goose still around, very accommodating
