Watch the birdie...
Nice little glossy page on the coastline, which glosses over the fact of how bad the bus services are(in certain areas)
You think that's bad?

The f***wits have produced another leaflet expressly targeted at persuading dog owners to get their four-legged crap-dumping bird chasers onto the bloody beaches by bus..!

Beacon Hill

Disappointing at Beacon Hill on Sunday. I think Wood Warbler and Pied Fly are now a distant memory at this site. Not even Redstart or Blackcap in the woods,
just Chiff Chaff and Willow Warbler.

The highlight was 2 very loud cuckoos flying around the 'tree pipit' field as well as a 2 red legged partridge, common buzzard, GS woodpecker, whitethroat and hare. No pipits though.

The wood has lost a lot of big beech trees over the last year or two.
A real shame.

What a coincidence. A pal told me the other day this was a good spot for Pied Flycatcher locally as I would love to watch some (one would do). I was going to go there in the next day or two. Although your post has saved me a trip it is a great pity to hear about the loss of species here.
Can anybody recommend a site that holds a decent chance of Pied Flycatcher please.

Cheers. Richard.

I had a nice day out at Harthope Valley today with a friend (sometimes BF member Fanky70). There was Spotted Flycatcher everywhere, Redstart, Tree Pipit, Lots of Whinchat, Ring Ouzel, Good numbers of Garden Warblers heard but only one seen, Cuckoo and Red Grouse. But the stars of the day weren't birds, but two Adders, a Common Lizard and a superb Slow Worm that we found next to the track beyond Langleyford Farm.

The only down side to the day was the two gamekeepers riding around on there quad bikes with there shot guns strapped to the front.

Hi
Allenbanks is good. There's also Muggleswick Woods and Derwent Gorge NNR. If you park at Crooked Oak and walk in from there you'll get pied fly, redstart and wood warbler (and a great walk in brilliant woods).

Make The Effort

Readers - if the W-w Black Tern is still about tomorrow, make the effort to get a look. I have never seen an adult before, and it's a stunner. Beautifully black body, white wings (no surprise), red legs and bill. And a Barn Owl over the east reedbed of the North Pool and a very vocal Reed Warbler in front of the hide.

Super-silly-um and Andy Atkinson - I have pm'd you re. Beacon Hill.

Sounds very much like East Chevington Chris.

This is where I saw my very first Black Tern AND W-w Black Tern in July 2003 - incredible views with BOTH species in my scope at the same time!!! :eek!:

I really should listen to that little voice inside my head tho' :smoke: All this thundery muggy weather this past couple of days has had me thinking of WW's and Blacks :king:
Who was it wrote in a book that this weather often produces them....Bill Oddie?
