Was at Woodhorn Church at 1100 today and heard a tawny owl hoot once. Trying to find a public footpath running South behind Woodhorn Flash. Could not find it from the church end, nor from the other end south of the railway embankment. Any ideas and is there Tawny in the area?

Hi Martin,

It would be worth your time dropping in to Cresswell and also East Chevington. Yesterday the latter had 3 Long-Tailed Ducks, Black-Throated Diver, Red-Necked Grebe, Slavonian Grebe, Red-Breasted Mergansers not to mention 3 Stonechat, 8+ Lesser Redpolls and other common birds.

6 Snow Buntings at Chevington Burn this afternoon. 4 males, including 3 good lookers!

Just seen the news that NWT has purchased Cresswell Pond from Alcan. Great to hear! I assume this helps to protect the future of the reserve. The information on the NWT web site still seems a bit vague about how the relationship with Crown Estates will develop, however...

Anyway, had a trip out to Bothal Pond at lunch time, and managed 45 species in an hour, including a great spotted woodpecker to take my list for the site to 85! Other highlights on the water included 8 pochard, 4 gadwall, 2 shelduck, 2 goldeneye, 3 great crested grebe and a single little grebe, while waders included snipe, oystercatcher, curlew, redshank, and the first decent number of lapwing I've seen there this year. c50 Canada geese held 4 greylag, while a large skein of c400 unidentified geese were seen high up, heading north.

NWT didn't know that Crown Estate were the new landowners of adjacent areas until "purchase" of the pond was complete and as yet there has been no opportunity to meet. For now the current farm business tenancy has another 8 years to run but its good news despite this.

There are also number of other important conservation areas that now have a new owner too - lets hope that is also positive :t:

Just wondering.... Wasn't Bothal pond on Alcan-owned land? It seems a long way from the plant but I have a vague recollection of seeing the a For Sale board up with Alcan on it...or did I dream it?

Nice to see 3 brambling among 40-50 chaffinch from the hide at Wallington Hall today, as well as two red squirrels putting on a great show for a very full hide. Some very noisy and showy Goldcrest by the adventure playground too, and a little grebe and two teal on the pond.

East Chevington 10:00 - 15:45

Key species for me today was a Firecrest just as I was leaving the hide at the North end with the Redpoll feeders. Settled in a few trees and kept moving for roughly a minute then moved backwards into the conifers and was lost from view c.14:00. By 15:45 hadn't been relocated to my knowledge. Lovely bird to stumble across and only hope it can be refound but there's a fair stretch of conifers and more around.

THis aside there were lots of other good birds around Red-Necked Grebe, 2 Slavonian Grebes, Black-Throated Diver all very good views from hide near the island. Stonechats, Redpoll, Siskin, 3 Long-Tailed Ducks, Red-Breasted Mergansers, 2 Chiff Chaff including one calling briefly near Red Row entrance and the usual suspects. A lovely days birding all in all and was lovely to meet so many people out and about today.

Only negative news was nothing from the Bearded Tit except very early doors.

A firecrest!!!! Arghhhh sickener!!!!!!! :storm:

Today was supposed to be my day off work and I HAD planned to be at East Chevington by 8.30am to spend a few hours there, looking for spring flowers as well as birds, before heading along to Druridge & Cresswell....but a phone call at 7.55am from my shop meant I had to cancel my day off and work instead!!! All because L's bairn had a bug and she had no babysitter :C She owes me a firecrest!!!!!! :smoke:

Fingers crossed the phone stays silent tomorrow.....at least until I get outside of mobile reception! ;) :-O

Spring has arrived in the uplands

Spent a very rewarding 90 minutes late afternoon today in the Coanwood Burn / Coldshield area (NY7258) Waders now well established on territory with Lapwing and Curlew displaying everywhere along with a single pair of Oystercatchers and several single Redshanks. Good numbers of Snipe “drumming” I had 7 around me at one point. A mobile flock of 61 Golden Plover present on the moor many of the males showing extensive black suggesting Northern birds. Further on a single bird watched displaying with that distinctive stiff winged flight and the hauntingly beautiful display call (one of my favourite sounds of spring). A male Grey Wagtail fed along burn sides along with 3 Pied Wagtails. A single Northern Wheatear was a nice surprise perched on a fencepost. On a thin strip of grassy field 3 Blackcock and a single Greyhen were feeding. Red Grouse were very vocal with a lot of display observed. In a field next to Coldshield farm 1000+ Starlings and 340 (ish) Fieldfare foraged.

My first ever Mediterranean Gull at Budle Bay today at 4.35pm. Seen a few at Newbiggin and Red YJU7 at Amble many times in the past few years but this is the first this far north :t: Lovely black head in comparison to nearby Black-headed Gulls but no ring on leg.

Redpolls

Trip up Northumberland with my friend Derek and came across a flock of Redpolls. One of the Lesser Redpolls had a distinct Orange crown. A couple of Mealy Redpolls amongst them was a bonus to see.
