Not particularly exciting... And I definitely wouldn't go out of your way when heading to Cumbria. There haven't been any Roseate's seen here yet (but a little on the early side) and Common/Sandwich Terns are only in small numbers; holiday makers don't make it easy for terns to rest.

Whitburn has been excellent for terns this past week (peaking at over 2000 Arctics, plus the odd Roseate), but the weather turning to south-westerly will stop any such numbers continuing.

Bother. I let this guide my choice and went to check ot Kielder Water instead. When I got home the first thing I saw on birdguides was 4 roseate at Sandhaven this afternoon.:-C

A distinctly autumnal feel to the birdlife on a ride out to and then up the coast yesterday.

7 shoveler and 5 pochard at Bothal Pond were nice to see, with a large gathering of lapwing also showing the breeding season is done and dusted. At Cresswell Pond, a similarly large number of lapwing, with 30+ dunlin (many still showing breeding plumage), a dozen or so black-tailed godwit, and a single greenshank (and a few grey seal surfacing near Snab Point, too).

Further up the coast, more lapwing and dozens of teal and mallard along with a handful of gadwall and early wigeon at Druridge pools, with 8-10 willow warbler flitting about the trees making the most of the abundance of insects on the wing and a lovely whinchat showing very well on the new path fence-posts at the northern end of the pools.

A little egret in front of the open hide at Hauxley, with a more distant common sandpiper added a bonus to the coastal birds, while 3 buzzard calling to each other across the fields just north of Ulgham on the way home made a worthwhile final stop.

Short stop at Bothal pond this evening, finding a common sandpiper on the southern shore of the pond and a wheatear on the horse field opposite. Also a large number of linnet (150+), swallows (30+) and sand martin (20+)

It looks like nobody goes birding in Northumberland anymore, so I'll post an update from my garden!

Autumn seems to have arrived this week.... having seen nothing but woodpigeon, blue tits and house sparrows for weeks, yesterday saw the arrival of 4 long-tailed tits, 3 chaffinch, 5 goldfinch, a greenfinch, a siskin, a juvenile bullfinch, and a very rare garden sighting of a goldcrest on and around the feeders, while 6 blackbird and 2 song thrushes stripped a rowan tree of berries. Add to that 15 house martin, 3 coal tit, a great tit, no less than 6 blue tit and a rare appearance of a juvenile blackcap, it was quite a record breaking day for my small urban garden!

Nice one M, trust me to be out of the country yet again when a goodie turns up, still to catch up with a Red-footed in the UK. 😳
Actually had a 'four-falcon' day today - also got Peregrine (while waiting for the RFF to appear), Hobby (East Chev., flew through S) and Kestrel.

Probably common knowledge ;) but just seen my first Grey Squirrel in the centre of Alnwick this morning. Walking home from work and passing the Castle at 9am a very bold individual calmly ran across the road in front of me and popped up one of the lime (?) trees in front of the High School.

A lovely morning for a stroll, so a shame I have to work. Nevertheless, had a stop off at Bothal Pond this morning on "the way back" from the school run, to find a nice green sandpiper on the southern edge of the pond, along with a plethora of ducks (shoveler, tufted duck, teal, wigeon, gadwall, mallard, shelduck), 200+ lapwing, a handful of Greylag and Canada geese (including a weird-looking Canada goose), and 6-7 little grebe. Plenty of swallow and house martin still on the wing, too.

I don't know, I haven't been there since last weekend. I would have thought that someone would have mentioned it on here or one of the blogs if it had been.
