Give Us A Clue

I have tried like a mad man to view the Green Winged Teal at Woodhorn Flash. I am confident I know where the Flash is, and what the Teal looks like, but have failed on three occasions. The biggest irritation is that I have been there either just before or just after the reported sightings.

Can anyone who has seen the bird assist with where it tends to be on the Flash.

Good day out in the Druridge Bay area today plus Woodhorn Flash.

Heron chased around by a few crows also Kestrel in the area hovering over the fields.

On to Chevington ponds No sign of Bittern but it was being well looked out for at the time I was there. North pond Slavonian Grebe, 2 x Red Breasted Merganzers, Little Grebe, Wigeon, Mallard, Pochard, Goldeneye, Teal. Off the sea at Chevington small parties of Common Scoters, 3 Red Throated Divers 6 to 12 feet from waters edge fishing, 2 x Red Breasted Merganzers also fishing.
70 Sanderling on the beach trying to keep their feet dry it would seem.

Druridge pool bumped into the Whooper Swan party again same crowd on the move, Tufted duck, Wigeon, Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Mallard.

Creswell Pond area never saw a Pinkfooted Goose all day till now upto 2,000 in the field south of Creswell pond. On the pond the Redhead Smew was fishing along with Red Breasted Merganzers x 2, Wigeon, Shoveler, Teal, Little Grebe, Gadwall, Mute Swan, Cormorant, Greylag Geese, Mallard, Dunlin, Redshank, Curlews coming into roost, Lapwings, Golden Plovers, nothing rare but as dusk came in it all made for a great atmosphere with all the various calls and whistling Wigeon, no Barn Owl seen on this visit, all in all a good day out.

Nice weather for ducks...

Aye, some good ducks in the northern county today, the Common Scoter at Cresswell was a treat, only ever had them as flypasts before. And as well as those mentioned in the previous post there was also Long tailed Duck and Scaup at Hauxley.
Other things of note were 3 Whooper Swans at Arcot pond and a Red Admiral at Snab Point, Cresswell.

Cheers

Just had a quick look on UK Birdwatching Links and apparently there's an American Wigeon at Cresswell Ponds and a Long-tailed Duck at Hauxley.

Got a day off tomorrow so heading off to the Druridge area - anything else good about?

Better Day

Started with my first Scaup at Hauxley and a LT Duck. Walked back to the car park and to the right of the 5-bar gate, saw 7 magpies. Not too much to get excited about. Got closer and saw a rabbit on the ground on its side squealing pathetically. The magpies flew off and when I was a few feet from said rabbit, a stoat appeared from under its neck area and entered the bushes to the right of the gate. Stood back and waited and after a minute or two, the stoat reappeared and killed the rabbit before dragging it into the bushes. An absolutely fascinating if not a little sad and gory event.

Off to Cresswell - did not see the American Wigeon or Smew but lots there.

300 pm, West Hartford - the best half hour of owl watching I have ever had. The light was superb, visibility excellent and a pair of SEOs were either mobbing a kestrel, being mobbed by crows or hunting the field to the north of the A192.

We had a day out and went to the A******' A*** at Weldon Bridge - a good lunch.
We always go onto the bridge to look for dippers. Sadly none, but a flash of colour and a kingfisher crossed the river diagonally and disappeared under the bridge. It's a long time since I saw this gorgeous bird!

Nearing Rothbury, we saw four swans and two grey herons, so not a bad tally on what was a jaunt rather than a serious birdwatching foray.

But yesterday morning, as we were having breakfast, I looked up and there was this beautiful grey heron sailing right over the house - superb!!

You had me a bit stumped there June!!! I was trying to work out which BIRD you had blanked out! ROFL :-O I assumed the first word was American but couldn't for the life of me work out the second word...until I added the letters up *durrrr*
Couldn't even think WHERE Weldon Bridge was - though I know now as I often drove past when I usd the A697 a lot.

Methinks it's time I went out........

does anyone know what the body of water is called just off the A197 next to bothal
thanks will cook

Hi Will

Your assumption is correct , it is indeed Bothal Pond. The pond can be viewed well from the A197 but it is much safer (and quieter) viewed from the minor road off the A1068 (sign posted Bothal itself - you can see where people stand in the gaps of the hedgerow, just East of Bothal Barns and the village itself.

Hi Will

It isn't called Bothal Pond (although many birders do use that as it's name). It's called Coney Garth. I think I bumped into you there during the summer and gave you directions to East Chevington (round about the time that the Bittern was showing very well).

cheers

Crossbills?

Hi everyone,

A group of friends are going to do some birding around Durridge Bay and Cresswell Pond in December. One asked last night if there would be any chance of seeing Crossbills during their day trip. I have only seen Crossbills in Durridge Bay Country Park in January and usually when the weather is much colder than it is now. Does anyone know whether any have been seen?
