Hi all, I have just finished putting together a 2013 Bird Report for the Whitlingham area, which will hopefully be of interest to other Norwich-based birders. I have attached a copy to this post, and will also be putting it up on my blog shortly.

Cracking bit of work James, FYI there was a flypast Little Egret on the 27th of December. Record shot attached.

Thanks. Yes apparently Little Egrets are getting commoner at Whitlingham despite my lack of sightings. On the 1st Jan I spoke to the guy that does the solar boat trips and he said there had been one on the island with the Cormorants for a few days over the summer. Rather lazily I left that out as it messed up my formatting!

A couple of crossbills were in Cringeford Wood at the back of UEA this morning. Other birds in the area that were of note included gadwall at West Earlham marsh, water rail and Cetti's warbler on the river and a single mealy redpoll in with the lessers at the feeding station. Good day but far too many idiot dog-owners!!!

Garden bird day

Just had a blackcap in the garden today - seems to have been about all winter.

Could it really be true?

A birdwatcher phoned Birdline East Anglia with news of not one but three Cedar Waxwings in Norwich y'day. Could it really be true?

I really enjoyed reading your comprehensive report James. I particularly liked the Articles and the addition of the photos. Well done.

Cheers

A friendly message to any birders/photographers trying to see the Mealy Redpoll at UEA. Please stay out of the gated compound where the feeding station is. This area is used as a feeding station so birds can be ringed, entering the compound not only disturbs the birds but also interferes with several student projects which utilize the area. Any further problems and UEA security will stop people viewing completely.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

P.S. Its only a Mealy Redpoll!

Peregrine

Peregrine on Norwich Cathedral in the late morning sunshine.

More birds about the city today. Two singing song thrushes, an active dunnock and the usual garden birds.

Nice walk around Whitlingham today. Most interesting was a distant two-toned grebe on the Little Broad that disappeared when I moved to get a better viewpoint.

6 Shoveler on the Little Broad and 5 Kingfisher sightings which must have been at least 2 different birds.

Referring to James' excellent report I see that 8 Mistle Thrushes with c20 Redwing on Whitlingham Meadows is worth a mention.
