Haven't been since the summer so what is happening on the wheatear field?

Hugh

Natural England are creating a wet meadow habitat to compensate in habitat lost during the building of the flood wall. It is a big job that is involving two very hefty diggers.

its good for warblers in the summer, i wonder what they're going to make of it, i bet there won't be any groppers there come next year. shame. i always think its a bit quiet otherwise, so hopefully it'll be a successful habitat in a few years.

went again today, 2 bitterns were on clifton pond along with lots of wildfowl 100+ wigeon, 100+ gadwall, 30+ goosander and 5 goldeneye.

The waxwings at Giltbrook/Newthorpe offered exceptional views today. c120 at Halls Lane/Smithhurst Road (where the former turns into the latter and a small lane runs away down the hill towards the A610).

Should be around tomorrow if anyone wants decent photo opportunities. Here's my efforts.

Brilliant photos those Chris.

Went down for yet another run at Holme Pierrepont today - fantastic array of birds just on the main boating stretch. Gadwall, Lapwing, Redshank, Kingfisher, Pochard and others.

No bins or camera on me but there were two very small diving ducks swimming around with the Tufted - couldn't get a decent look but has anybody got an idea of what they could have been? Very small indeed, spent a lot of time diving too. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Thanks. I was down at Holme Pierrepont today, lots of little grebe around too (as well as the list you mentioned) - wouldn't be those would it?

Also 5 Whoopers over Netherfield earlier, and 4-5 Brambling and a Peregrine.

Edit: and nearly forgot, a Buzzard flying in the distance from Netherfield, looked an interesting bird and then started hovering with big deep wing beats in almost no breeze with at least some pale underparts through the scope. A very distant bird but very, very interesting - we couldn't relocate.

That's it! Thanks for that, no doubting they were little grebe as I went down this morning for another look - not sure I realised just how little they were. Goldeneye down there today too.

Waxwings

Still some decent sized flocks in the Eastwood/Kimberley Area. I had c100 in the fields behind Gilthill School this morning, 40 remained this afternoon, and also noted c80 at the bottom of Pinfold Road.

finally caught up with some waxwings today, tried looking for the big flock on compton acres, but they must have moved on, but did see 8 birds around the duck pond.

apparently 200 were seen in gamston - closer to home for me!!! :C

How do? Had a trip to rufford yesterday and had excellent views of lesser spotted woodpecker, at least 2, male and female, by the main car park just past the tree with presents hanging from it. They were with a mixed tit flock but didn't seem to roam very far. We first saw them at around 11:30 and watched them for around half hour, we picked them up again in the same area at around 15:30

Attenborough

Hi All

Popped long to Attenborough today in the hope of seeing the Smew that has been seen their on the river.

Plenty of the usual stuff around although the lakes are still frozen over in large areas.

Red crested Pochard (pair) seen from the road bridge by the visitor centre.
Bittern gave a brief view for my better half at the Tower hide (I was looking at a Teal at the time darn it)
The Smew was tracked down on the river by the head of the path that leads from the Tower hide to the river.
From the Kingfisher hide a Water Rail was giving good views feeding below the feeders.

Tim.

Nice shots Nick.

Might explain what some birders were looking at on Sunday. Had thought they were just trying to get a shot of the Heron in the paddock.

Oh well I will know for next time.

Tim.

Thanks Tim, there were four there this morning one circled the paddock and settled back on the edge of the river. Two others flew up when they were disturbed. There were also two Water Rail feeding in the same area together plus a Kingfisher. As we left Attenborough there were Waxwings at the traffic lights.

Later in Derbyshire we had Barn, Short Eared and Long Eared Owl all on the same fence at Willington with a Bittern roosting in the tree opposite.

These are those birding days you never forget, will add photo's to my 2011 list later this week

Cheers
Nick

4 Little Grebe on Bestwood Mill Lakes this morning - yes - that's as good as it got! Also 100+ Siskin in the alders around the lake.

Anymore sightings recently of the LSW's? Hoping to go down there in next week or so. Whereabouts in the car park are they as I presume the tree with presents on is no longer there? Any assistance would be appreciated?

Also any recent Hawfinch sightings here or at Clumber?
