Out and about today saw 6 Avocets which look like they will probably nest. Heard my first Sedge warbler of the year. Got a Peregrine (in fact I got 2 if you count the one I see from my bedroom window daily) a few Blackcaps, a Yellow Wagtail, still some Goldeneye around, and three nights ago discovered a Short Eared Owl hunting in a field not far from me. Also saw a Blue Tit entering a nest hole with food today so looks like chicks are imminent.
Oh yeah and the first House Martin over our house today too.

Found a male Northern Wheatear on farmland N of Bestwood Village on Friday morning, and refound what was possibly the same bird a couple of fields along on Saturday morning. The first Willow Warbler and Common Whitethroat were in on Friday morning, with 3 Great Black-backed Gull over. A Little Owl on Saturday morning was my first this year.

Today at Attenborough there was a Gropper showing amazingly well a couple of feet away on a fence post by the start of the path to the elevated hide, where a Cettis was seen in the brambles below. Also 2 Garganey around but they managed to elude me.

Was it not Clayworth Common and also The Willows where you and others saw the (female) Merlin.

Neither of these sites are within the Idle Valley NR bondaries!

Another example of why not to use the IVNR as a 'blanket name' for the far greater Lound Bird Club recording area.

Besthorpe north nature reserve today

2 cuckoos
Numerous sedge warblers
Numerous reed buntings
Pied wagtail

hi glazzers

i've been helping out with the trust at besthorpe over the last few months. the contractors should be gone in the next week or so, and with them gone, access to the reserve should be a little better. however, there is still much work to be done on the rest of the reserve and it will inevitably take a long time for the new reedbeds and wetlands to establish.

nice to see a cuckoo has been heard though, didnt hear any last week, although a couple of shelduck and 1 LRP were present. hopefully i'll hear some when i'm there on thursday.

if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask, or even email the trust, they'll be happy to help.

oh yeh, went to netherfield lagoons today, a single drake garganey was seen clinging to the edges of the reedbeds of the slurry lagoon - showing pretty poorly. also c40 house martins over the same lake

I think I saw 2 cranes circling over the fields off the A453 as I was driving towards the M1 from the city around 5ish on the 29th - not far from Attenborough obviously. Thought initially they were herons until I saw the outstreched necks.

Common Sandpiper and 5 Yellow Wagtails down by the trent at Clifton Grove yesterday, seems to be a lot of stuff moving through/arriving at the moment!
